This is best deal right now, and if you message the seller, they'll probably do better, because they were at $80. However, you need to flash it first, and that requires an i7 920 or similar just to flash the board for a hexcore Xeon to work with it. Good board for overclocking tho.. Manufacturer refurbs..

Thanks I actually saw your other post about this and was considering it.

But I actually almost sniped a pre-built custom pc for 150. Had nice antex p180 case in pristine condition, i7-920, p6t se, 256gb ssd, 256gb hdd, blu ray, 680w power supply... etc.

Problem is when I tried to snipe it I put in the wrong password. Yeah, I'm a bastard.

Eh, looking at the north and south bridge cooling... good luck running it above stock.

Yeah, is this the one you're looking at? Not bad deal at all.. Already 12Gb RAM & 1TB hdd.. Add hexcore Xeon & better PS..

I had it on my watch list but no, I had an even better deal. If only I didn't screw up my bid. Should've just bid early.

Do you or anyone else know if xeons fit in Alienware Aurora R1 motherboards?

(Edit: err, I mean if they're compatible with them)

Model for motherboard is: H869m

I think it's an MSI board? Could I flash x58m bios on to it?

Edit:

Yeah, x58m is MS-7593...

The aurora's is MS-7591...

They must be similar? Can it be flashed?

I have the ebay board that burpo linked. If you end up buying it pm me because there is some extra documentation you will need to flash it. I'm running at 4GHz rn with x5650.

Yes, it can be flashed for the hexcore Xeons, not the same flash as the MS-7593. You'll need an i7-920 to flash it tho.

How do you like yours so far Shellls? Decent upgrade for your $200?

Damn. Missed one of those Auroras I could've got for like $200.

Real nice.

That's alright though I got another amazing deal on ebay--but it's a DX58SO so I'll see how it does. Might scrap the rig for parts and resell the motherboard. Keep the case and power supply though. Amazing case.

Yes its very nice. Went from 315 in cinebench to 910. The only downside I'd say is the lack of sata 3, usb3, ect.

Honestly, I wouldn't bother with those kind of boards. I had a MSI x58 Platinum and it needed quite a bit of voltage to get even 4ghz out of a x5670.
I think it needed something like 0.0525v (1.25v vs 1.325v) more than on my P6T Deluxe v2 and it never seemed to be 100% stable. I ended up dropping it to 3.8 and it is working fine (gave the system away).

I also tried a x5670 on the MSI that did 4.4@1.325v 24/7 with the Deluxe v2 as a test but I went over 1.4v and I just couldn't get it stable at that speed.
I picked up a P6T6 a few months back to replace my Deluxe v2 for $120 on ebay and it was able to run the x5670 at the same settings.

In the end I decided to move to x79/1650 when I saw a few good deals ($300 total) and ended up breaking even after selling the P6T6/x5670.

Basically, a good quality board is worth a few extra bucks.

So I went back to try to OC my x5650 again after getting a better cooler. Was able to go from 3.4 to 3.9, with a 22x multiplier. But I'm a little confused since the max CPU multiplier I can set is 21, though I thought it was supposed to be 20. But in the BIOS, 21 is yellow where all the other multipliers are white. I'm not sure what that means, but either way, when I open CPU-Z, it shows the multiplier is at 20, but it will sometimes shoot up to 22, which gets me to 3.9. I'm a little lost on where this 22 multiplier is coming from since the max one I can set in the BIOS is 21. Anyone know where this 22 is coming from?

The highest bin is 23, and my board will lock 22X as multiplier across all cores. So, it depends on the board whether it will clock that high or not..

The 22x multiplier is a turbo-state multiplier, which is used when using all of the six cores. 23x is for 1-2 cores turbo. Some motherboards allow you to keep your 6 core turbo multiplier always on, by setting the intel turbo boost to enabled in bios. But if you do that, your processor won't lower the clocks when it's idling.

Mine idles at 12X when set to 22X all cores, as long as I have C states & speedstep enabled.

Does IBT not use all 6 cores? When I run IBT it goes back to 20x. Then when I stopped it, it went back to 22x.
On some boards, (Asus P6T Deluxe V2 for example) it reduces the multiplier based on how much power the processor draws, and thus lowers the clockspeed.

Looks like I missed out on a lot of fun with the X58 platform. For some reason, I always avoided it. (Owned P35, P45, G31, G41, X48 boards though.)

Yeap, always wished you were in on the fun Larry.. Overclocked hexcore Xeon's carry serious workloads with ease. Problem is boards with USB3 & SATA3 are getting hard to find.

Hi All,

My first post so be kind please. Having stumbled upon this thread last week whilst looking at what upgrades were available to me being the owner of a Sabertooth X58 and an i7-930 processor (at least 5 years old now) I decided to purchase an X5670 processor off eBay UK for £60. Now my trouble is that I have had no success overclocking the i7-930 following any of the guides in the past and have always wondered if I just got the duff board or processor. It has also been mentioned that maybe having 6 sticks of 2Gb Corsair XMS3 memory to give me 12Gb ram might also effect my ability to overclock. My cooler a Thermaltake model I believe may also be hampering my overclock.

So I intend to transfer the motherboard and remaining guts into a new Deepcool Dukase case and install a Corsair H110 AIO to see if this gives me better results.

Anyway my first question is what is the likely maximum BCLK I can set on the X5670 without needing to change any other bios parameters?

My second question is can anyone who has a stable overclocked X5670 on a sabertooth X58 (Burpo maybe?) supply me with their full settings for the AI Tweaking page of the bios or if not give me a clue about which are the important settings to change from auto.

I have taken a copy of Burpo's settings from page 101 of this thread and intend to try them once I am sure my cooling is adequate.

Many thanks in advance.

Richard
