Yes, to my understanding I would have to run only the registered Dell ram or only the Corsair ram in order for the system to recognize it. Is that right? Or do you mean I must find unregistered ram?
Some registered ecc ram works. I've been running 2rx8 registered ecc on my ud5. However most reg ecc are 1rx4 or 2rx4, those do not work.

Do you guys know where to find some cheap ram? Either 3x4gb or 6x4gb. Looking on eBay I can't tell which ECC ram will work.

When I had my x58 board and Xeon I bought a 2GB registered ECC chip to test with and it worked. ECC wasn't enable because there were no BIOS options to turn it on. So it will work.

My plan was to fill it with 6x8GB registered sticks but sold the platform before I could investigate further.

Some of the sellers on eBay either lack common sense or are trying to rip people off. First I got that DOA Xeon CPU, now I was refunded on the ram as well. His listing said he was selling 12GB (3x4GB) but ships me 3x2GB.. The sticks say 4GB but only because it comes from a dual channel bundle package. Partially my fault for trusting his listing without providing the actual ram stick's info.

So I was bored and started looking into Ram more and it looks like people have had success running in excess +24GB on the i7 CPUs. I ended up purchasing 32GB Crucial Ballistic Sport 4x8GB for my W3690 (990X) to test myself. If it doesn't work, I'll run (24GB) 3x8GB in triple channel and sell the single 8GB leftover.

I am looking for a triple channel 24gb kit for my sabertooth x58 board with x5650 @4.4ghz and not finding a good option, seeing ecc kits and 4x 8gb kits but know I can't use 4 sticks in triple channel.

Anyone have a link to a 3x8gb kit that will work in this motherboard?

Yesterday I ordered Crucial Ballistix Sport 4x8GB DDR3-1600 C9. You can sell off the 4th stick like I will end up doing.

well, i went and grabbed some pny "performance" ram at best buy, got one pack of two 8gb sticks and a pack of a single 8gb stick, was concerned about having problems getting triple channel to work with sticks not matched, but it is currently working great, seeing 24gb in windows and seeing triple channel in cpuid cpu-z

they were black pcb and hynix chips, pretty sure i dont have my bios settings optimized but i am up and running at 4.4 with 24gb

Crap, getting some random crashing, what obvious settings in bios for oc ram do I want to look at?

Jacked the CPU voltage and qpi dram voltage to 1.5 just to see if it works, too much? oh, and dram bus voltage to 1.6

Ran it like this for four hours with wow and Netflix going, temps were fine, no crashes.

Ran it all day playing wow and watching Netflix, this is with wow at 3200x1800 on a 42" Sony and at the same time watching Netflix at 2560x1600 on my dell 24" wfp all has been good.

lowered cpu and qpi to 1.4 and upped the dram bus to 1.65 based on some things i read here and there, testing now, looks good so far.

That DDR3 memory is incredibly expensive for what it is. I mean, you would think it would be cheap, but they want a pretty penny for it.

Running fine on 1.4v for CPU and qpi with dram bus at 1.65

I am wondering if it could have been the dram bus voltage all along, never changed it before, was always set to auto.

So of course now I am wondering if I can get more speed from the ram, one weird thing about that is the next step in ram speed is 2005mhz and the uclock says it needs to be at least double but the options there fall just short at 4009 I think and then 4208.

Ram is now at 2005mhz voltages still 1.4-1.4-1.65 looking good, ran passmark, scored 93'rd percentile for system overall.

With the holiday season over, I finally installed the ram. I used 3x8GB Crucial 1600Mhz Cas9, as well as an existing set of 3x2GB Corsair 1600Mhz Cas9. Booted it up and so far all is well. Indicators show 30GB usable ram in triple channel so it's safe to say the Xeon W3690 is able to handle in excess of 24GB max. Even though I bought 2 dual channel packs of 2x8GB, they work fine in triple channel. Now off to eBay to sell the leftover 8GB stick.

I'm using 6 sticks of 2rx8 registerd ECC (Kingston KVR1333D3D8R9S/4G) memory in my Sabertooh. I also used 2gb 2rx8 sticks before i got the 4gb sticks.

I think I will grab either a x5650 or x5660 on ebay, see how it compares to my 980X. The 5660 is actually lower price, is one generally better than the other at OC?
