XFree86 config Help

I'm running the slackware 8 distro kernel 2.4.5 on an Asus A7M Athlon 1.33.

When i try <XFree86 -configure> i get an error saying that there was no mouse detected.
I've tried both the ps/2 and usb connection neither seem to work. This however is not the main
problem. When i try running <XFree86 -xf86config /root/XF86Config.new> to test the configuration my monitor goes blank
and then goes idle as if there was no output signal from my video card (Radeon 64mb DDR VIVO), from there i'm not sure what happens
as i can't see anything nor can i escape out of whatever happens (ctrl + alt + backspace) doesn't work.

you tried /dev/psaux and protocol "ps/2" for the ps/2 mouse and it didnt work?

and as for the screen going blank....the same thing has happened to me before and in my case it was actually the monitor not correctly switching modes. try turning the monitor off and then back on.

I got my mouse to work. I will try what you said about the monitor. I tried XFree86 -config again and
while this time the mouse worked the monitor actually went from black/blank to an off centered gray nothingness,
however it didn't go off so i assume its doing something with my video card. so i will try what you suggest and get back to you.

No such luck. Monitor when turned back on, displayed the same grayish nothingness.
I'm assuming it was a hard lock since i couldn't even get my keybd led's to light. and had to restart.

is it like a grey crosshatch pattern? can you move the mouse cursor? if so, that is xf86, nothing is broken!

hehe. No its more like a monitor out of sync grey haze (decent sony GDM 400PS) and nothing works at all. only way to get the system to respond is to hard restart.

I've had better luck in Slack 8 with the older xf86config script - I think that's the name, not in Linux at the moment. It always set up my Radeon just fine, though I would need to set up the mouse by hand. Something else to try at least.
