i think your card is overheating and down-clocking itself. take a picture of GPU-Z's Sensor tab while you have something running in window mode like a game or Unigine Heaven Benchmark (anything that stresses the GPU) and upload it here.

I don't think it was a good idea to "upgrade" to such an old GPU in the first place when you can get something 2-3x as good for less than $100. :/ Anyway, my guess is that you're running out of VRAM.

thanx for ur reply....... yeah i guess u r right but actually i thaught that hd 4850 should give me something more then gt 240 thats why i replaced that but it seems like a worst decision....... and i dnt think so that m out of vram bcz during my laggy session in games i checked gpu z and it shows that i have 100 mb still spare.....

well the temps and clocks look OK, your cards is not throttling. on the other hand you did run out of VRAM. time to lower resolution and remove some special effects.

in nfs most wanted 2 i put my resolution to 1440x900 and put all the settings to low and turned off special effects like light scattering and headlight shadows..... after doing this the game starts very smoothly runs smoothly then same thing happend again... after 5 to 7 min game starts to lagg.... maybe i should say jerk.... for example.... for 5 seconds game runs smoothly then in the 6th second it suddenly struck then again starts to run smoothly for the next 5 seconds and same thing happen repeatedly........

i dnt think so that its an issue with game graphical settings.... bcz if thats the case then the game should be smooth forever after putting all the things to low but thats not happening... its still jerking after few seconds of smooth gaming...

so, i think maybe its windows 8 or the driver which is not compatible with each other cause that problem bcz that card is quite old now and plus we all know that amd's driver support is terrible..... and if thats not the case then maybe i guess its something wrong with the hardware of the gpu.... i cant see any reason other then the 2 i mention above.... now what do u guys think????

What you describe is what happens when you run out of vram. We typically refer to it as hitching.

AMD's drivers are fine, they are not the issue in what you are describing.

I would run MSI Afterburner with the big graph up and then go and play. When the hitching starts, tab and and look at the graph and see what it shows. If it shows 90% or more memory usage, you are running out. What happens is the game will go to allocate a chunk of memory and there wont be enough. So older data in memory has to be cleared out first, and then it can allocate it. This causes the hitch. No graph will actually show 100% utilization for memory.

When I bough my old PowerColor HD4890, since it's a 190W VGA, and I had it on a OEM 500W PSU, I experienced this exact issue.

I knew it was the PSU so I downclocked the card and it ran smoothly.

What I gether is the PSU basically started bleeding power and couldn't power card well enough after 5 minutes. Either that or the increased temperatures on the card made it draw more power.

Anyway, be sure that your PSU isn't dying, like mine was.

I think it could also be the card running out of VRAM as it only has 512MB and BF3 can easily go over that

I was having problems with my 'old' 1GB GTX 460 SLI running out of vRAM even at my 'lowly' res of 1680x1050 in Crysis 3 and Battlefield 3. Now that I'm at 2GB I'm OK for 1680x1050 for every game but I'd want 3-4GB for 1920x1080+.
