Has anyone married the Zalman VF700 HSF with the "new-style" XFX 6600GT (the one with the silver HSF)? I'm concerned that the VF700 doesn't fit.

EDIT:

I just got email from Zalman that states "The VF700 Series should fit the XFX Card just fine."

Just bought one from newegg!

Let me know how it works for you - I'm looking to do the same. For the price, it's pretty cheap insurance. My friend's XFX 6600GT (silver HSF, got it 2 days ago) runs the same temps as mine, so my guess is the "new" HSF just isn't cutting it.

Also, let me know how easy it is getting the gunk off of the GPU, I'm a n00b at replacing HSF's... on video cards, anyway!

I haven't done it either, but from my inspection of the card it looks pretty straightforward. There are a few plastic pins holding the stock HSF onto the board. Unless someone else has a better suggestion, I'm planning to just use a pair of needlenose pliers to "squeeze" the pins out. I thought I read somewhere that there was a partial gap between the HSF and GPU, which I found VERY interesting. It might explain some of the temp issues.

EDIT:

Here's my installation experience

I just put an XFX 6600gt in my new comp. It idles at around 83 degrees C and is up to almost 120 after 10 minutes of UT2004. This is not normal is it??? I think it is funny that other people are worrying about their cards reaching 60 degrees when mine is reaching double that. Should i return it??

I would be very worried about that one there. I'd return it if it's hitting more than 100*C. If you're under that, I'd say it's a little hot but nothing to worry about too much.

Crap. Now y'all have got me worried about my XFX 6600GT that's supposed to be arriving in the mail this week. Wondering if I should just pony up the extra $30 and go with the MSI card.

From Anandtech's article here

The way that the cooling solution attaches to NVIDIA's reference design is with 2 holes. Basically, the popular rectangular heatsink design is positioned precariously on top of the GPU and can pivot easily around the ASIC. This means: don't touch the heatsink. This really causes problems in situations where the thermal tape or glue is used. The kind of fulcrum that the NVIDIA reference design created is beyond powerful enough to tear through tape and snap the strongest glue without a second thought. Once those seals have been broken, cooling is severely compromised. Looking back at our numbers, this may be the reason why we see some of the extreme temperature numbers that we do. Of course, we were extraordinarily careful to avoid touching any HSFs after we realized what was going on.
My XFX 6600GT AGP idles between 50-53c depending on time of day, and the highest load temp I have seen is 70c after a couple of hours of FarCry. It also hit 70c in 3DM'05, I got the temp by running the free version till the flying ship vid test is about to end then hitting esc and already having the temp tab open so the temp reading would be displayed immediately.

I imagine if I loop '05 for awhile I might be able to get to 75c or so but as the card runs perfectly and I am having no issues with 3D gaming with it BFD. I would suggest checking to see if the cooler did indeed break contact with the GPU as the article mentions.

I'm gonna revive this thread as i havent seen a solution really posted yet, or whether its really a problem.

Like others above, my temps are 50c Idle, and close to 90c when in Counterstrike-source. I can see the temps as i play cuz i'm dual monitoring... its kinda alarming at times. As soon as i exit from the game, the temp drops immediately down to 50c (as it prolly should) so that's why i havent seen it before.

So does the NV Silencer really help? Does it even matter?

My eVGA 6800GT idles around 55c but that's with a 400/1100 over clock. (350/1000 original). I heard 6600's run a little hotter so the seems normal to me.

60C is fine, whoever says it isnt doesnt know what their talking about, if your ocing, its a differant story. I ran a 6800nu at 62c idle for months.

I too am having some cooling issues with my XFX 6600GT. Here's my system:

Chaintech VNF4 Ultra
- added Vantech Iceberq Copper Chipset Heatsink+Fan
A64 3000+
- stock HSF
XFX 6600GT
- with the HSF shown here

Right now the system is basically at idle and my temps are:

CPU: 13 deg C
System: 25 deg C
GPU: 40 deg C

As far as I can tell, this GPU temp. is reasonable. However, I am concerned because there is one chip on the back of the board, about 1.5 inches up from the bottom edge, and 1 inch in from the right edge (as seen in this picture) which is hot to the touch, like hot enough to burn your finger if you held it there for more than a few seconds. At first I thought it was hot because it was close to the motherboard's chipset, but now that I've upgraded the chipset cooling, I can tell the heat is coming from that little black chip on the video card.

So I'm just wondering if this is a defect or if anyone can explain why this particular chip would be so hot. It seems like the HSF is working because the area behind the GPU is just warm. But I don't understand why this one little chip is so hot. It's probably around 70-80 deg C. Does anyone else's 6600GT have this same hot chip?

My card runs at about 30C idle, under load while OC'd, runs anywhere from 45-55C for core, 40-50C for memory.

Edit: I've removed the stock grease they put on the GPU + Ram heatsinks and replaced it with AS5, didn't notice too much of a difference, although I didn't check the temps before I did it.

My xfx is running at about 52C idle and gets up to low 70's full when playing UT2004. I am OC'd to 580/1200 with stock cooling. I am running UT2004 at 1920x1200 with all the eye candy turned on and it hasn't skipped a beat. I am getting some accessories to bring the temp down. Temp fix is a small fan and an open side panel. brings the temp down to mid 60's full load. On a side note, if you can afford the 2405fpw from Dell, get it, now!

My XFX is idling at 63C and it is locking up on 3DMark2001SE. I am not overclocking it.

Time for return?

i run around 61-63 idle in windows and 73-75 after playing 10 min of UT2004...and f0r those who think the NV silencer will work..IT WILL NOT!! reason being the GPU on both the old cooling solution card and the new silver solution card IS ITS AT AN ANGLE....after a few full hardcore days of researching i have found that the only cooling solution(without mods) for the NEW silver XFX 6600GT (AGP) is indeed the Zalman copper one...it does hang of the edge 3cm....but i mean who cares its just 3cm...

if anyone find any other solution that is preferably cheaper...LMK ay duggyb@gmail.com

Yeah..I was having this problem as well with my Leadtek 6600gt at first. My card was idle around 55c and load at 80c, which worried me a lot. Anyways, i just bought a Zalman vf700cu and it dropped the temps a lot! 33-36c idle and 55-60c load, I suggest that anyone with temp problem to get the Zalman.

i had an xfx 6600 gt agp and it idled at around 45. are you sure that xfx is the problem and that you dont just suck at cooling and using airflow.

My 6600GT got up to 77C during CSS just now

It crashed, lol. Luckily I ordered some AC MX-1 thermal compound. We'll see if it'll do the trick

That is WAY to hot. mine runs at 48C idle, and 56C load, but then again, I'm special

EDIT: those temps are while overclocked to 570/1200
