PROBLEM FIXED
I went into the BIOS and enabled SLI, and that fixed the problem.
I recently acquired an XFX 750a a72p SLI, Athlon 64 X2 6000+, and 4GB of Corsair DDR2 (4x1GB) from a relative as he didn't need them anymore. To complete the setup I am using my old EVGA 7800GT and OCZ Powerstream 520W from my old A64 3200+ system.
I set it up in a barebones configuration outside the case with just one of the ram sticks in the first dimm slot, the 7800GT, the 520W Powerstream and a keyboard, and it refuses to post. All that happens is the diagnostic LED stays stuck in "88", and the fans on the CPU and GPU both spin.
The mobo will not post with the 7800 GT in either slot, but will post using the onboard graphics, and will also post with my friend's newer ATI card (but only in the primary slot).
The 7800GT works in both my friend's computer and my old motherboard, so I'm at a loss as to what is causing the problem.
Clearing the CMOS hasn't worked, and neither has flashing the mobo BIOS to the latest version or switching to the backup BIOS.
I am not familiar at all with anything past single core A64s so maybe I'm missing something patently obvious.
