It's more of a worthwhile upgrade for people still running ATi 9600/9700/9800 cards or those nutters out there still runing Geforce FX 5 Series (5200/5700/5900 ect)

From what I've seen Performace is little better then a 6600GT.

Wish they would toss together a 7900GS AGP. That would be a nice upgrade. Or at least let the 7600GT AGP came back into stock for @ $150

7600 GS is a definate step up from that. Something from the X800/850 series may also be worth looking in to.

I'm on an ancient AMD 2200+ I think - and deciding whether to replace the graphics card I just had break with this, or upgrade it all.

I wonder if this card is so overpowered to make it silly to use with a 2200+. If so, I guess I should just get a PCI-Express motherboard and card.

But it's tempting to take the cheap easy route (avoid installing a new MB) and just get this card.

I think you already know it's best to just bit the bullet and move into PCIe and the AM2 or Core 2 Duo world. Better all around performance. Better upgrade path. Cheaper video cards. (7600GS cards are available for under $100 before rebate on PCIe). Unfortunetly that's quite an expensive operation to loose your existing RAM and move into DDR2.


You could always go the cheap easy route and still get a fast upgrade. Get the 7600GS AGP ... if it turns out to be overkill for the AMD 2200+ (which it might depending on the game) then you can add Newegg's Athlon64 2.4Ghz Socket 754 and NFORCE3 Motherboard Combo for $99 (+ Cheap CPU Cooler). You'll have stepped slowy into a major perofrmance upgrade for @ $225

While yes the Socket 754 is a dead end as far as long term upgrade paths go ... it's still not a bad chip for budget gaming.

I still play HL2 based games.... my CPU usually hovers around 70-80% @3GHzwith my geforce 6800 overclocked, which results in better gamming.

so.... i'm always looking for a good deal on video card upgrade......



My CPU is 3.0GHz and its stable at 3.4GHz, perhaps more but I just ran it at 3.0GHZ once I realized my bottleneck was my video card.

Anyone know of a quick reference to see how the different video cards stack up? Results vary from applications but it would be nice to have a general guide. I am sure there are others who do not want or need to go deep into this world but want to make informed purchases.

I feel your pain. I've got a XP 2400 and my gf4 just died. I'm trying to decide whether it'd be worth it to even get good video card or just get some cheapy 6200 because the only game I play is CS source and rarely at that.

As for the 7900GS, the issue is that if you are CPU constrained hugely, then a 7900 might offer almost nothing over a 7600.

I saw a 6200 for only $35 after MIR this week, I forget where but not hard to find.

gah i'm about ready to jump on this, but holding back only b/c a 7600GT agp exists but i have no idea when the prices will drop...

I caved and ordered one, it's just too simple to do for the old system.

But I'm thinking of a new system too. Sadly, I have a new Sonata case sitting in a box I bought a couple years ago that's now probably inadequate, with its 350W PS.

There is no AGP 7900GS. The best you could do is a 7800GS.
