Hi everyone!

I'm having a strange problem and hopefully someone has a good solution. I just upgraded my pc to a 7800gt and after a random amount of time when playing battlefield2, my monitor says its lost signal and then I have to reboot. During normal use I have 0 problems. My setup is as follows:

MSI k8n Platinum SLI
AMD X2 4400
2 gb corsair XMS (4X512) 3200
XFX 7800 GT (came overclocked)
Antec truepower 480 PS
Antec P180 case

I have uninstalled the 81.95 drivers and have reinstalled them and also I have checked the temp on the card when I come back its at 51C (max is 115) so the system seems really cool and stable. I'm really unsure what is going on.

Any input is really appreciated!

Thanks,

Justin

check the connection to the video card.
Make sure you have the stupid little screws tightened

Are you using a LCD or CRT? I think BF2 had some issues with LCD's, but can't recall just what it was.

I'll check the power connection, thanks for the idea.

Also, I am using an LCD. I actually have two lcd's plugged in (if it makes any difference).

Thanks,

Justin

Oddly enough i've been having the same problems playing source. XFX 7800GT with dual monitors. Only happens once in a great while. My friend who has the same card with a single monitor does not have this problem.

My guess is it is probably a PSU issue. You have a True480, I have a True550, and he has a Forton 500. My guess is it is time for an upgrade.

Man! All the sites that I have read say that 350 is all that should be needed. But, I think your right. All of my diagnostics seem to go to power problems. Nothing else seems wrong. My settings are mostly default and nothing (besides the GPU, which comes like that) is overclocked. I guess its time for a 600? LOL Seems kinda crazy. Are you running 4X AA when it happens? I'm wondering if that has something to do with it?

Thanks for the info.

Oh, and it only does it during BF2. Never any other time.

Have you figured out the problem? I just got my Forton AX500 today and I am still experiencing the same problems. It is driving me crazy!

Was a no go for me I am starting to wonder if the card is defective?

Well I haven't had a problem with it recently. I played a few hours today with no problems at all. I did turn off my MSI Corecenter. But, I'm thinking I did that before. I have made no changes other than taking AA from 4x down to 2X. Let me know if anyone figures out a solution though.

My first power supply died out on my while I was playing battlefield 2
my 2nd power supply died out on me while i was extracting an highly compressed rar file
my 3rd powersupply just died out last night when I was playing battlefield 2 on a 1vs1 lan game while encoding a 3 hour new years eve video in the backround. all I heard was snap crackle pop and then my computer just shut down.
obviously my cpu and gpu was at max load

my system specs
intel pentium dual core 820
2 gb corsair xms ddr 2 667
xfx 7800 gt
2 sata hdd
gigabyte ga 8i945-pro
with current psu rosewill v450-s

im planning to purchase a new power supply,
any recommendations

If you keep buying generic POS power supplies like Rosewill, thats not too suprising. Get an Antec, Fortron, Enermax, Seasonic. I am using an antec 450w with my Pentium-D and also with my X2 and 7800GT with no issues. Best bang for the buck is the 450w Fortron, I just got one, and it works great.

Hey stevty,
do me a big favor
can you run the 7800gt combined with the pentium d 830 on a fortron 450 please
and then run battlefield 2 online multiplayer at max settings and resolutions
and then run an encoding program to max out your cpu load at 100 percent
and then continue on playing battlefield 2.
and then if it survives for 2 hours.
then your 450 watt fortron is the awesome
and i will purchase it immedietly after my 4th powersupply dies.

ok i just got myself a coolmax ct650
so obviously its pumping 650 watts into my system.
I call it luck that i got myself a 650 watt powersupply because i ordered a 500 watt power supply from new egg. its either just luck, or newegg is screwing my rma warranty up or newegg was just playing it smart by sending me a 650 watt cool max ct650 because i will be rmaing a psu every single week.
anyways
rosevill 450 watt v series psu costed me 46.00 with s+h
piece of crap died on me
coolmax 500 watt ct550 luckily got a ct 650 650 watt psu costed me 56.00 with s+h
This psu comes with active PFC
go on wikipedia and check out what PFC is.
PFC helps stabilize and regulate voltages.
Might be good for the xfx 7800 gt

first day of trial runs on this coolmax

also im still runing the xfx 7800
luckily none of my mainboard components got fried.

I think the lockups have to do with the amd dual core cpu.
Surprisingly I'm not suffering any lockups,
Only major problem when I bought my system were constant power supplies and 3 dead power supplies.

Or my biggest guess is that the lockups all involve the power supply.
If the video card isnt getting enough power from the psu. it will just lockup the entire system or simply restart the system.
When it comes to terms of dual core. The dual core cpu with definitely draw much of the power from the psu at high priority causing a massive system failure.
Another flaw with factory overclocked video cards is that it sucks up more power then a normal stock video card in which it requires you to have a better psu.
example,
xfx oc 7800gt
compared to a regular 7800gt

The coolmax 650W should work ok, but don't expect it to ever actually put out 650W. Good news is you aren't using anywhere near that much power. You aren't even using 400W at max load.

You would have been better off buying a 450W Fortron for $50 at Newegg IMO. It would definitely handle anything your current system could throw at it, and the rails will be rock steady.

In the future, stick witht he reputable PSU brands only, and you won't have PSU's dying on you all the time. If you're not sure if a PSU is good or not, ask here BEFORE you buy it.

Edit: BTW, PFC does nothing for your system stability. It actually only helps the power company out, vice the end user. If you want to regulate voltages, get a UPS w/AVR (which everyone with a high-end system should have anyways).

I heard things about the XFX 7800GT having problems because it uses a molex connector and not a pci-e connector on newegg.
