xfx 7900 gtx dissapointing

I just got my xfx 7900 gtx 675/1700 and i get like 10190 in 3dmark05. I know im cpu limited because it is at stock 2.4ghz. I got 7860 with my 7800 gtx in 3dmark 05.

Problem is that i notice zero performance gain in battlefield 2. What gives? It is the same fps as my 7800 gtx. Really dissapointing. fps still dips to the 40s. Im going to have to consider returning this card.

all at high settings 1280x1024. 4AA and 4AF. Yeah fps is high at times in the 90s but when i enter the battlezone it drops to 40s. That sucks

I'd say that's a fairly reasonable gain and probably what should be expected from the card.

Just a question, what made you upgrade from a 7800 gtx to a 7900 gtx?

try to oc the cpu to say 2.6. If the problem is not as bad, then you know its the bottleneck.

That CPU is WAY bottlenecking.

If all you play is BF2 you didnt need to upgrade. My lone 7800 GTX did BF2 1600x1200 4xAA 8xAF all max no issues, a 7900 GTX ofr 1280x1024 is extreme overkill.

bah i tried to oc on this mobo and it cant even handle it. I guess ill just have to wait till intel conroe is out. Really lame that amd 64 are only effective when overclocked. No and i dont get 40-45 all the time. Framerate is all over the place. in certain areas its is 80-90 and 50-60 in others. But this inconsistant framerate is really getting to me. Paying premium for a top of the line gpu should at least mean getting steady fps not jumpy fps.

Seriously though AMD dont have to overclocked to be effective. Its just that maybe since your GPU is high end, your CPU cant keep up with it since its not top of the line. That happens with high end cards.
But tha inconsistent framerate can happen during intense fights escpecially with as many players that BF2 has on its servers. Alot of players at once with all the eye candy on will bring the framerate down. It wont stay at 90 all the time.

at least in CS:S the framerate is high and i got 165 in the stress tess as opposed to 150 with the 7800 gtx. I just redid 3dmark05 with firewall off and got 10364 so i know my pc is up to spec.

Really lame that i cant get constant fps in bf2. At least in CS:S the fps avg is 90-80.

i have a 3800+ x-2 and a 7800gt (overclocked edition from evga)
i play on the exact same resolution but with 16 af and 2 aa...and i never notice any slowdown at all ..thats with everything turned on in the options menu. so maybe it is cpu but...im not sure if that game is multithreaded...if its not then my cpu should be going slower than yours ? though i havnt had this comp for long to know for sure about the cpu's personality.

Do this: crank the settings all the way down, 800x600. Then see what frame rates you get. If they're 100+ all the time, it's not your cpu. If they're still low at 800x600, you got problems no video card will solve.

Crank the settings up one at a time (resolution last) and see which one is killing your performance. Then determine if you can live without that piece of eye candy.

I got bf2 giving great frame rates at 1280x1024 with a 6600 non-gt with a 2ghz sempron using the selective eye candy approach. You sure you got your ram in the right slots and working in dual channel?

1)yeah it is in the right slots and in dual channel. I dont think there is anything wrong with my config because in CS:S fps is high. Also 3dmark05 is in the right range at 10360. Its not that i get bad fps in bf2. On wakeisland 64 player server, I get 99fps when im standing on the ship deck with my team to the point where im riding the boat to reach the island. But when i approach the island and start to enter a firefight, fps goes to 45-60.

2) In battlefield 2:special forces, wow fps is worse than bf2. I get like 40-60 at most on a 64 player server. You know how sucky 40fps is?

3)Also coolbits 2.0 is a little screwy. It did not do anything when i hit detect optimal freq. I also got artifacts in bf2 after i used coolbits. So i uninstalled the nvidia drivers and did DC pro in safemode. Then i installed 84.20 again and the artifacts were gone. Is coolbits 2.0 buggy for 7900?

4)So Arkane13131, your fps in bf2 never dips below 60? If so wow kudos to you.

You know how sucky the code is on BF2, I returned my copy cuz it was so crappy. I'm sick of EA's BS excuses for a game, if you wanna blame it on something, blame EA not the hardware especially if it's working good in other games

no it shouldnt. I guess i just have to blame the retards at DICE who programed bf2. You know that they are experts at creating new bugs every patch and horrible at solving existing problems? Its sad though because bf2 is the only game fun for me enough to play. It is buggy and unoptimized as hell but i play it only because there is no other fun multiplayer fps out there.

You can see some benchmarks for BF2 here.

They don't describe how they test-- which map, how many bots/players, etc. But at 1280x1024 with 4xAA 16xAF they show quite a bit of a difference from a 256GTX to a 7900GTX (though their min/max chart at the bottom seems f'ed up).

If BF2 is your main game, an ATI card would've been a better choice.

As for you being CPU limited, I really don't think so. See this chart that shows an FX-57 offering about the same performance at 1280x1024 as a Sempron 3400+.
