Tempted to ditch my 780s for these. Would not cost anything to upgrade after tossing them on eBay, and these would be more future-proof (4GB vs. 3GB, a non-forsaken architecture unlike Kepler).

Edit : Done. Actually made a little money in the process (sold my 780s for $530).

I can't believe this card isn't sold out yet!

It's very quiet at idle and load. For $220 this annihilates the 960 and 970 for price/performance, plus lifetime warranty.

Idle and load noise levels

I mean honestly who in the US that has access to Newegg is buying a 960 for $200 when the $220 XFX R9 290 4GB is at least 45% faster?!!

Gamers need to realize the landmine that is the 2GB 128-bit 960.

The OP should be updated to reflect the additional $25 off $200 AMEX Twitter deal, effective until Feb 28, 2015.

That makes the card $220 - $25 = $195.

Tried to get that Twitter deal but they said the max number of redemptions had already been used.

In case anyone's wondering, got my cards today.
Rev 4.2 using Omega 14.12 drivers.
At stock clocks, Unigine Heaven with Extreme tessellation, VRM-1 maxes out at 75C (fan is at ~66%)

Looks like XFX fixed their VRM cooling issue.

Also, I won the GPU lottery. Both cards will unlock to 290X

^ Unbelievable. Dual 290Xs for $440+Lifetime Warranty, and they even sweetened the deal with the CIV BE game coupon.

WhoBeDaPlaya, Congrats on your upgrade from the 780! Let us know how the gaming experience compares and what you think of XDMA CF

If this was an NV card, this thread would have 1000s of views....

This $220 XFX card literally wipes out everything in price/performance from the $150 R9 280 all the way to a $330 GTX970. Incredible.

EDIT: Newegg now has MSI Gaming R9 290X for $260.

Thanks, I'm pretty stoked!

Both cards unlocked and survived a night of Unigine without any problems, though I had to resort to the P1T1 VBIOS (nothing else worked).
Not happy with the fan profile on P1T1 (would get to only ~48% under load). Will grab the VBIOS from a friend's Rev 4.0 XFX 290X DD and try my luck with that.

EDIT : Holy smokes! Just talked to a very helpful newEgg CSR, and she gave me 2x $20 GCs and 2x Civ:BE.
Might end up with 2x 290X DD for ~$360. Never imagined I'd _make_ a ~$140 profit by "sidegrading" from 2x 780 to 2x 290X

WOW, you keep getting the best deals I should have followed your path and sold my 7970s at the peak of the mining boom but couldn't do it since I was on a contract overseas and left my rig in North America. I love hearing stories like yours when you keep getting faster and faster cards for minimal cash outlay, and in your case for profits ! Keep it up.

I don't feel as bad about my 7970s losing almost all of their value though because each of them made me more than 10X its purchase price.

Is Newegg faster with their MIRs than Tiger Direct? I always lose track of Tiger Direct MIRs because they take so long.

Dang. I should've jumped on this. Now $240 AR.

I will be upgrading from a 6950. Originally had my eyes set on a 280x, but it seems the 290 is significantly better, and is the performance per price winner.

Isn't it $240AR + $20 GC + game? Still not too bad at ~$200 after the GC and selling the game, especially if it unlocks.

From my end, GC & game are now gone from the deal that was there this weekend.

I remember it used to be a huge PITA to wipe drivers/software of one brand to switch to the other (NV --> ATI or ATI --> NV). Is that still the case?

I have a GTX760 and this looks tempting. Is this a worthwhile upgrade or is there a better NV option for sticking with NV in the sub $225 realm?

Not really. Switched from 2x 7970GHz to 2x 780 to 2x 290X. Just uninstalled drivers/software with the original cards installed, shutdown, install new cards, install new drivers, done.

Heck, my spare LAN party system has both 14.12 and 344.75 installed so I can use either brand at will. I know that's the video card equivalent of going a*s to mouth, but hey it works

So now it's $240 AR + $20 newegg gift card = $220.

Would this complement my i5 3570k @ 4.4 Ghz well? Don't want my CPU to hold this back - don't think it would.

Is this basically the best time to get a new card?
