So tempting. I'd been trying to figure out what to use my gift card on, and I've been wanting a second 4890...

how is this a hot deal? I could just gt a 5770 for the same price. Same bandwidth, same shaders, I game at 1920x1200....
128bit DDR5 = 256bit DDR3 (assuming @ same frequency)

It's slower w. less texture units. But cooler and smaller form. I like the 5770 but it aint no 4890

Title states it's a warm deal.

Could turn into a hot deal for those who have Best Buy gift cards, reward zone certs, or even an item they wanna exchange towards it.

4890s now use gddr5.
The 5770 has more of everything except bandwidth, plus it runs cooler, uses less power. The memory bandwidth however nerfs it below the 4890 levels. So do you want slightly faster or dx11?
Also the 5770 can be had for $155 so it is cheaper, but slower.
This 4890 is a good deal.

I think you might be confusing memory speed with bandwidth. Your own link shows the following bandwidth at GB/s:

4890 = 124.8
5770 = 76.8

Yes, the 4890's GDDR5 is clocked at a slower speed (975mhz) than the 5770's (1200mhz) but the 5770 is chocking on its 128bit bus-width.

"it" in my post was referring to the 4890.

Direct comparison of the 2 cards in question:

http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=615&card2=608

So far I'm not seeing the value in the 5xxxx series cards over the 4xxx series. Even my $75 HD4830 has about 55GB/s memory throughput and 640 shaders vs the 'new' 5770 with 20GB/sec more bandwidth and 160 more shaders at more than 2X the cost. At least that 4890 has 2X the bandwidth, but it does draw 2X the power of that 5770.

Personally I will wait for the cards with 1200+ shaders at $150 or less ...... just my 2 cents.

thanks for quantifying for me exactly why it is that I don't want to buy the 5770. You hit the nail on the head. I want it, it would be a nice upgrade, but there aren't any games that I play that _need_ it (only quake wars enemy territory) and you're right, none of them are a good deal. 1200 shaders@$150 is exactly what I want.

It would be for 191.69(tax) at my local BB, though I wounder if replacing one of my 4870(512)s in crossfire, would i see any benefit.

the 4890 is better than the 5770... the 5770 is just "future-proof" whatever that means...

by the time real dx11 games come out you can just go get a 5850

Best bet for you would be sell your 4870's and get a 5870 I'd think. Or maybe some 5770's in crossfire.

I agree with Ken but not the part of 5770's. If you do it stay with the 5870 or 2 5850's.

It's $192.99 with free shipping at Newegg so if you are in a state you don't have to pay tax in for Newegg this may be a better deal.

last time i looked ne didn't take bb gift cards or reward zone points...
