XFX Radeon 5870

Hey all,

In the ATI Catalyst Control Application, I have the fan speed set to 30%. How much is that in terms of rpm that the gpu fan is running at?

Also the temps and noise levels seem to be fine for my PC except for my 5870 gpu. What are some tried-and-true solutions/products that I could do to lower noise levels and more importantly decrease card temps.

I know there is water-cooling, but I'm not sure if it's worth it just for 1 component. I have also read about this CoolIT OMNI waterblock w/ radiator similar to the corsair H50 for the cpu. Then there are numerous VGA coolers some notable top sellers I saw were the Zalman brands on Newegg.

Funny you should ask. Everest tells me it's about 6700rpm. At 50% it says it's at 10,000rpm. Somehow I don't believe that's accurate.

I set mine on auto. Seems to keep the gpu temps under control.I have a hd5770

if you have the 5870 model with the fan in the middle, i found that it only holds a steady 75-80c if you set the fan to 50-55%, same goes for any ref cooler at 40-45%, and the ref cooler is actually a bit quieter imo than the non ref XFX cooler, but mainly because you also need to have much better case airflow with the non ref since it exhausts inside the case. this is with 2 cards in crossfire in a 75f ambient room. i run my GPUs 100% load all the time doing distributed computing projects, so i dont like them running super hot all the time since running them at 85-90c 24/7 also makes my room way hotter, so if i can move the heat out of the case faster then i can exhaust it from my room faster as well

Well at 30% speed i idle at about 55C and if i find time to game, under load it goes anywhere between 75-90C depending on the game.

yea running the automatic profile under milkyway@home i would avg 85-90c load, and while they may be rated for that that's with the expectation that they're only gonna run that hot for a while under a gaming load. i run my stuff 100% load 24/7 right now, so as long as the noise from the fan isnt audible over my hepafilter which is also going 24/7 it doesnt bother me. by default it was running at 33-37% fan lol.

Do you care about noise levels while gaming or just at idle?

Before you spend any money, try to set up custom a fan profile with MSI Afterburner (works for all HD58xx cards).

Wow I have a HIS v-cooler 5870 and running 100% with milkyway and fan on auto I average low to mid 60's. I guess that is pretty good... I didn't really know how mine compared.
