XFX Warranty Yes or No if you Remove Stock Cooler?

Hello all.

My nephew upgraded his psu and gave me his old XFX 5850.
He had been having issues with having artifacts under load.
I would like to attempt to RMA the card but there is a problem.
Thinking it was a heat issue he removed the original cooler, which has 2 stickers covering diagonally opposed screws that say "warranty void if removed", and cleaned and reapplied the thermal compound.

I have read conflicting posts that XFX indeed allows the use of aftermarket coolers and the removal of the original cooler to reapply thermal compound, but I have also read that they no longer allow this.

Do you think they will honor the warranty as long as the original cooler is still on the card?

thanks

XFX does not void the warranty for removing the heatsink. Of course, unless you damage the card in the process. Put it back in original condition and RMA it.

I believe there is an XFX rep at [H] forums if you want help.

FWIW I've RMAed XFX card about a year ago with "warranty void" stickers removed and it was fine.

thanks everyone.

I think I will give it a shot.
worse case scenario they send the card back and I'm out $14 s/h.
It's an old kinda low end (by today's standards) card anyway, but still worth the gamble.

Another question..the card is suppose to have a double lifetime warranty..whats needed to transfer the warranty from my nephew to me?

thanks

I've RMA'd with them after removing the small stickers on the screws and it was fine. Just don't remove the other larger sticker on the board.

As for the double lifetime, I thought they got rid of that.

Well, here's where it gets complicated.

We dont want people to think of it as a blanket statement and that it's okay to remove the warranty void stickers on the cooler. Because alot of users are from different regions, the governing warranty laws dictate what we can allow and disallow. We can't expect everyone to know our warranty terms since they vary by region. The reason we ask you to call us is so we can verify if your region allows it. Here's a quick breakdown

GPU's
North America- 2year to Lifetime warranty, Welcome to remove warranty void stickers/mod the cooling solution.
South America- 2 year warranty, Dont damage the stickers otherwise you ruin your warranty locally (usually 1 year), if you do, you have to ship to North America for your warranty, which is atleast $40 in shipping fees. We're not supposed to accept them, but we do
Europe-Asia-Africa- Usually 2 year warranty, tends to vary, ask your local retailer who sold it. do not molest stickers.
PSU's
Everywhere, 5 year warranty, registration not required (receipt may be), don't touch the stickers (we have to send them back to Seasonic and they wont accept them if the stickers are molested.)

I hope that helps

I have to say their lenient warranty policy causes me to think favorably of them and IMO provides support to the reseller market for their cards-- I'm more confident to buy one, even if it -has- been used for nothing but mining.

It helps quite a bit & means I'll be adding XFX to the very short-list of companies I'll purchase a GPU from. (and the only one who offers AMD)

Note that I already use XFX PSU's when the price is right.

One remaining question though ... can the warranty still be transferred to the second owner?

PSU's have a standard 5 year warranty across the board. 1st 2nd, 3rd owner, doesnt matter. As long as Seasonic will credit us for the faulty part, we will credit you the replacement. (sometimes receipts required, try to get one from the original retailer purchase)

GPU-s. All have a standard 2 year warranty, which doesn't transfer to the 2nd owner. We reserve the right to deny a 2nd owner a 2 year warranty, However, I've never actually had to do it. We still get the credit back from our plant and AMD, so we just pass the savings forward... If we know something malicious was done or someone is trying to break the system, we may enforce it.

4000,5000,6000 transferrable warranties are still transferrable, 7000 and R series do not have transferrable (unless they were a replacement of a 4,5,6k card).

Are all XFX PSU's Seasonic based? that is a major positive in my opinion. I hate having to research PSU OEM's when looking for a new one and Seasonic is the best in my experience so this will make me more likely to look at XFX PSU's if thats the only OEM you work with.

This was one of the reasons I bought my XFX PSU, I read it was made by Seasonic.

XFX Support. Do you guys check for flashed BIOS's on Radeon 290's? Like if the first BIOS is stock but the second has been flashed to unlock to 290X, do you care?

thanks for the info everyone, especially XFXSupport.

A question on the double lifetime warranty. The card is a 5850 black edition and I don't think my nephew registered it. Does that kill the ability to transfer the warranty?
Would the lifetime warranty still apply to the original owner?

thanks

that depends. Did you brick it? If so, they most likely care...

Not at all, In fact it works fine at 290X levels with a small .06 voltage core bump. The issue with my card is the Elpedia RAM is unstable at default speeds (1250) regardless if set the card in 290 or 290X BIOS mode. Games will freeze up after some time (10-30 minutes). If I reduce the memory speed to 1200 this problem goes away. Therefore the memory cannot run at the default speeds and is defective.

The card is less than 2 years old and I'm in Canada so just wondering if I ship the card back with a flashed BIOS will it be rejected? If so, I guess I can always flash back the stock BIOS to the 2nd BIOS but it would save me some time is all.

Yes! On the high end cards that are no post or artifacting/crashing irregularly, we do. It was more prevalent early on when people were bricking 290s by making them 290x's, despite our warnings... that wasn't a fun time, but its much more rare now.

We try to work with everyone on a case by case basis and only fall back on the rigid warranty when we feel that something is being abused... If we know no one else registered it, and the original purchase receipts date matches our internal date, we don't hide behind the registration requirement (usually, unless abuse). Its something we've always tried to make as many exceptions on because its a hard thing to explain to a customer. One point of the registration is to help make you a lifelong customer, emailing you once every 3 months regarding, whats new, whats going on in the GPU world, and hopefully a sale so good, your next card will be XFX.. without that marketing, the Warranty's cost goes up. This is one of the many reasons of course, but its not a "useless" registration in our eyes.

If we know the case makes sense, there's no point in making an enemy out of the customer since the whole point was for them to come back in the first place. So you see, its complicated.

Tip for RMA's Everywhere:
Always have a ticket # and receipt before asking for an exception. Make sure the person who can give you what you want, has to do the least amount of work possible to give you it. Provide them as much as you can beforehand so they have less to ask for (or hide behind) and instead give you what you want. (they know they've given RMA's/exceptions for less)... and being polite is typically always a good thing too.

If a customer is angry, I will often get rigid with the warranty to avoid a long/demeaning conversation with an angry person.

There's alot there, Sorry.

Great! Okay, if you have any more questions or concerns, please let me know. Thank you, Mark

Hey XFX rep, why company decided to remove Lifetime Warranty from r9 390 cards ?
I was going to buy but then i saw they all have 2 year Warranty and i've change my decision. Like this you'll have less customers trust me.
It's temporary or final?
