I've been installing this thing at work, I'm not really a fan of big desktop environments, and I can't say that I feel any different about XD, but it definitely looks a lot better than the others. I also think that generally, since 2.0, gnome has done a better job of focusing on useability, whereas kde is still just totally windows-ey.

Here are some screenshots, they don't show the login screen though, which looks awesome.

Nice screenshots, but...

I am now through with KDE/GNOME. I prefer XFCE/ ICEWM.
<ot>BBWF, Kahakai looks decent. Maybe I will give it a try.</ot>

Bah, what took you so long

I used fluxbox/IceWM for several years, until I got so sick of trying to explain that linux could be prettier to possible converts that I switched to KDE. I like to show off my linux boxes and get an oooohhh & aaaaaahhh kind of reaction instead of a blank look followed by comparisons to XP.

Posted on a Sharp Zaurus 5500 with 3.10 Sharp ROM...... If anybody cares

Two words: comfort level. Having moved from a windows world to GNU/Linux, I wanted to understand what different apps do; how to configure (um.. screw-up) the system, etc. I spent some time in GUI/CLI mode. Now I am comfortable with CLI, so I thought it was time to bid the heavyweights goodbye.
Time to dump gaim and say hi! to Centericq ...

Not that I have been doing anything significantly productive using GNU/Linux.

Nice post, but I'm afraid I was being kinda sarcastic with that comment

Truthfully though, everyone can be productive using linux. Just do some office work in vim for an hour or so

I installed XD2 on one of my boxen just a few days ago.
It's a RedHat 9 box, figured I'd see what it was like.

And I must say, I'm impressed, it's nice and clean, I love the theme, and it's easy enough that I'd feel comfortable letting my parrents use it.

Still prefer KDE myself though

Turn that frown upside down; that's a good thing.

As a matter of fact, I just got done reinstalling Gentoo on this box; I'm now KDE-free. XFCE4 is my DE now, and as the days go by I find myself becoming more and more comfortable behind the $ prompt.

Edit: I'm actually moving over to fluxbox until XFCE4 is done - the bugs are pissing me off.

I don't know about you guys but urpmi on Mandrake has got me hooked. That and the fact that I like that Mandrake compiles it's rpm's for i586. IMHO I can see and feel the differrence on both a 450 II file-server/email server I got running at home and on a 1.7 ghz primary desktop which I also use at home. When I compared RedHat and Mandrake for some reason MDK felt a lot more snappier and faster IMHO. **Shurgs** Oh well. Oh yeah here are some screenshots I made while playing around with KDE's new window drop shadow patch that was included by TexStar in his KLib's rpm. This will more then likely make it's way into 3.2 along with transparent kicker support and font drop-shadow support !

You may be joking, but I can't count how many times I've been momentarily puzzled at the string hhhhhhhhhhhh when I try to scroll down in MS Word. Vim is ugly to learn, but once you do, it's damn fast and surpisingly intuitive for the fingers.

I always use bash in vi mode, so whenever I'm on other peoples' machines, and trying to go back in the command history, I find myself typing kkk a lot and they wonder what the hell I"m doing :Q

Try it: set -o vi. It rocks.

Yup I know, it also makes good practice for playing roguelikes , and every once in a while when I'm in a hurry. I do actually use vim for office work......

Yes, Vim is the best thing (not realy.. maybe the best text editor thing) that ever happened to me. It's so much faster.

I first saw it and tried to use it, it was very frustrating, but I saw it's usefullness. So I downloaded some typing tutorials and relearned proper finger placement. Now it's a blast.

I almost hate using MS Word-like word proccessors because everytime I want to do something I have to reach All The Way Over There to that stupid mouse.

Hmm.. I think now I am going to have to print out a command list of Vim so I can learn all the cool stuff like repeating command lists... What I do most right now for copying and pasting is realy cutting and pasting... I hit "5 dd" to delete 5 lines in my xf86config file, then jjjj to go down and then p to paste from the history buffer. What thing I like is when I am working with configuration files or writing simple programs... When I try to use the file and I made a mistake it will give me a error like "error wakkawakka on line 354",
then I "vi filename" then I hit: "353 j" to zip to that line. cool stuff.

I know that everyone is not hip to the whole cli thang. But here is how I look at it.

The original nitendo had, what like, 4 buttons and the control pad? I loved the intellevision pad with the 12 number button, the analog disk, and the painfull 4 little side buttons. The sega was a nice pad, all round. But the sony is the best with the maximum of 16 buttons and gizmos or so. But my computer is unparralleled with it's 127 buttons of control.

Now that's priceless

I have begun to wonder whether the DE makes much of a difference to people who are (even slightly) computer literate...
I left my home machine running blackbox the yesterday (I usually leave KDE running for my girlfriend). I came home and she was surfing the web, checking her email, doing some word processing, and a couple of other things; I expected her to complain about that "weird desktop thing", but instead she asked me why I hadn't shown her blackbox (yes, she called it by name!) before.
Her exact words: "It's really fast and I like the right-click menu thing"

I almost plotzed!

Damn, a girlfriend that actively appreciates blackbox. You've bought the ring already, I hope? That one's a keeper.

And thanks for the tip, BBWF. I had been meaning to try the vi bindings for quite a while now, but somehow never bothered to look up the syntax for setting them. Though I think that you're not likely to get that much out of bindings unless you're habitually stringing out big pipelines and such. The k=command history is pretty slick, though. But if I'm going to put my fingers in vi mode at the shell, I'm going to have to figure out how to map ZZ=exit.
