It was kinda funny, actually...the way she jumped, you'd have thought I caught her stealing

There's actually a way to make all readline apps use them, by editing ~/.inputrc, but I don't know it offhand, and for some reason, I only want it in bash anyways

The vi mode in bash is definitely a little different from real vi (mostly in how it's weird about switching modes, starts you off in insert mode, etc), and takes a little getting used to, but I'm used to it now.

Though I think that you're not likely to get that much out of bindings unless you're habitually stringing out big pipelines and such.
:Q:Q Blasphemy! It's just like vi as a text editor - once you're used to it, you HATE editing in anything else. I HATE having to sit there and press the arrow keys to get around, or try to remember alt+B/F etc, I can just zip around with w and b, A, I, dw, etc etc

The k=command history is pretty slick, though. But if I'm going to put my fingers in vi mode at the shell, I'm going to have to figure out how to map ZZ=exit.
I actually never use ZZ. In vi I use :w/:Q/:wq and in bash I just use ^D to exit.

S'pose I could, but at the moment I'm not at work, so I can't.

Nevermind. Redhat is a lame POS and it would take about an hour of work and 10 rpms just to get scrot installed. I have gimp and ksnapshot installed, but it's a bit hard to use a gui program....er....wait. BRB

Ok, nevermind, I couldn't have done it anyways. I can't think of any way of running an X app while only gdm is running, so no screenshot.

Damn, a girlfriend that actively appreciates blackbox. You've bought the ring already, I hope? That one's a keeper.

I concur. Blackbox and a gf who knows how to use it.

hmm.....

one day her desktop will be completely under my control <maniacal laughter> muwahahahahahahaha</maniacal laughter>

BBWF, if you're using RedHat, you can just apt-get scrot if you want to...too bad you have that lingering hatred for apt-rpm

Of course, I try not to use RedHat as a desktop for the most part, but you're probably forced into it at work; beats being forced to use Windows, anyway

I can? From where? I just have the (what I thought were) standard sources:

rpm ftp://apt-rpm.tuxfamily.org/apt redhat/7.3/en/i386 os updates extra
rpm-src ftp://apt-rpm.tuxfamily.org/apt redhat/7.3/en/i386 os updates extra

% sudo apt-get install scrot
Processing File Dependencies... Done
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
E: Couldn't find package scrot

BTW, I don't really hate apt-rpm, I just don't find it very useful (and this is a great example of why).

Well, they ARE about a decade (almost exactly) behind
Guess they haven't gotten to that package yet...
Here's a list of a few more repositories for ya (just for giggles)

For Apt-RPM

There's not much of a difference between the two, really, but I'd rather run Mandrake than RH as a desktop anyway.

That's a good thing because mandrake's apt-rpm mirrors are pretty much useless. Yes I did try, and no I didn't succeed.

The 'drake repositories are like that partially because not a lot of people use apt-rpm on Mandrake since they already have urpmi.

And partly because to get mandrake's apt-rpm to work you have to compile it from sources, which for most people isn't really worth the hassle especially since urpmi has a nice list of sources. available.

Yeah, isn't it amusing that an app that's supposed to make installing rpms easier doesn't have an rpm (at least for Mandrake)?

XD2 is a very nice desktop, I run it myself on RH8. I will probably be moving my desktop over to Debian soon though and I have not decided yet if I will run straight gnome2 or XD2.

Ahh, I think it only works with Debian stable..? I guess if I decide to switch my desktop to Debian and go through the hassle of getting everything working I'll just use unstable and Gnome2. But I haven't decided yet if the hassle is worth it to me.

Ahh, ok... that's odd that it has no support for Debian.

Not too odd.. I can't imagine many companies use debian on their desktop machines.

Neither can I

Hmmm, might someone explain to me why it doesnt work with Debian? Just outa curiosity... I was taking yet another plung and was gonna try Debian this time (done the redhat/mandrake thing already... wasn't impressed with their screwups) and then I saw this thread, and was thinking it'd be good to get running on Debian, however, then I see it doesn't work.
What gives?
