xmas gift choice

I am in the middle of building a game machine but lol by the time its done, the next gen cpu and vid cards will be out... I still have the PSU, Vid card, Monitor & HD to get minus the input devices. I could get away with an old 150 Raptor and one of the mouses I have laying around but the PSU VID & Monitor are primarily needed. I also will be going with an aftermarket HS&F first before I liquid cool it. (800D case) So far its rig 3 in my sig.

Which item would you ask for?

What I am thinking:
5870 <- scratch that, will be last thing I buy
1250 Evo Enermax
24" or >

And could I get some suggestions on an aftermarket HS&F - thanks

I'd get a monitor, its the one that'll drop the least in price. If you are looking at a long-term build gaming build, a video card is really a bad buy right now because ur paying top dollars for next-gen stuff (5870), despite knowing that in 3 months, things will have completely changed.

that depends on their budget. a good 24" monitor is over $500. The PSU is half that.

out of curiosity, can you link 24" 2ms LCDs that are "over $500" thanks

Why a 1,250 watt PSU? Unless you're planning on using 3 high-end GPUs that's just going to waste power compared to a 600-700 watt.

When people think "good" LCD, most people think IPS-type panels.
If you're going purely for 2ms, only available with TN panels (considerably cheaper than IPS), then you're going to be looking at <300$ for the most part.

I agree with DaveSimmons, a 1250 is really only worth the money if you've got a massively overclocked CPU, and 3-4 video cards in that rig.

I was planning on using my old loop one day in the rig, running X-fire, and doing some overclocking between 4 to 4.4Ghz

EDIT: then again, if I don't need that big a PSU after all of that, I'm open to suggestions... I was browsing reviews at Jonnyguru and I like the Seasonic M12D guts of the XFX 850 but the show stopper is the color scheme.. The only time I an interested in anything Neon is when I am working and if you see me with a neon reflective vest, please slow down

I would ask for the video card because that is the most expensive item!

The easiest component for a non-techie relative to find for you would be a monitor.
