XMS2 memory in a Dell 9200

I have a Dell 9200 on the way and need to add memory to the MB. I've heard that their are lots of problems between different DDR2 DIMMs and MB chipsets but can't seem to find if a particular memory will work. I want to use this memory: Link but not if it won't work (duh).

I've asked at Crucials website even though I expected them to say they only guarantee specific DIMMs they have tested in a 9200. But strangely, was told the XMS line will never work on any MB that does NOT support OCing! That makes no sense to me at all.

I've shyed away from memory that lists voltages of 2.0 or above based on problems people reported with high voltages and the same chipset the 9200 uses. This lists 1.9V and states that's the "standard". Different sources say the Dell is 1.8 or 1.9. if that matters.

TIA

p.s. if this is the wrong forum can someone point me to the right one? There isn't a memory forum per se and I see this as a MB/memory compatibilty issue.

I wouldn't pay any premium for a dell system. You should have ordered extra memory from Dell when you had the chance. You won't notice any appreciable difference with premium memory on a Dell board. I would check the dell memory stick for id when you get your new system, and if dell doesn't have a good price, search pricewatch for comparable memory.

Okayyyyy.

But does anyone have any idea if the XMS memory will work?

o1die, you can PM me if you want to know why I bought a Dell and why I didn't order it with more memory or why I won't be buying memory upgrades from them.

Don't think I'm badmouthing Dell systems or you. They're great for value. But to put premium memory into a board with limited bios adjustments is a complete waste of money. Crucial is a great place to order memory as they guarantee compatability, provided the price is right. I've had pretty good luck with lesser brands such as PNY or Pqi.

Didn't think you were bad mouthing but were getting off topic. Since you asked, Dell doesn't make it practical to add memory to the system. If you specify any extra memory, you lose the "free" upgrade to 1GB and end hence up paying close to $300/GBG for cr@p ram. And their memory is no bargain ordered separately.

I have no desire to put premium memory in the Dell, but I'm not going to pay MORE for average memory. I can get the XMS for $159 (AR). Far cheaper than "lesser" memory anyplace at the moment.

So lets see.... Buy premium memory for cheap ...or.... pay even more for worse memory ...or... wait for the price of average memory to come down and not be able to use my PC for its intended purposes while I wait?

I'll take the cheaper premium memory now. Unless someone says it won't work.

Crucial is worthless for getting information. They don't even list any 1GB DIMMs that they certify will work in the new Dells and just barf up CYA statements to the effect that none of their memory will work unless it in their configurator. i.e. please step back so you don't get bloody from us cutting our own throats and sending you off to our competitors. LOL

The JEDEC memory standard calls for 1.8v memory. And I am sure that Dell will adhere to this because it's the most compatible. Thus, getting 1.8v memory would be your best bet. Buying otherwise would be a gamble.
