xp-120 vs slk-948u results

Recieved the xp-120 the other day
and am happy to say its fits the a8v with no probs


I lapped the xp-120 base down to the copper. While sanding, I found the base was a little convex, and the nickel finish was definatley a bit of a bear to sand off, but it can be done.


With my setup the following results:

slk-948u
56cfm 35db fan
idle 34
load 52

xp-120
69cfm 35db fan
idle 31
load 44

All results using AS5, the xp-120 results are on a fresh install so temps may drop a bit more...
I am awaiting some Sanyo Denki 105cfm 39db fans , I'll update this thread when they get here.



I also tried using a gutted 120mm x 38mm fan as a spacer between my 120mm fan and the xp-120 to try and lessen the dead zone in the direct center of the fan. Temps didn't seem to change at all, but the sound went up quite a bit. I imagine it was due to the convex sides of the gutted 120mm messing up the airstream.

Definatley a top notch heatsink, and my slk-948u was no slouch, and besides mounting my 110cfm 92mm delta on my slk, there would be no way to match its performance and have a reasonably quiet case.

Just curious....
Any particular reason you are going with 105CFM fans?
I mean, 44C load temp is pretty good and you are probably getting near the point of diminishing returns.
Hardly seems worth the added noise IMHO.

Although I am curious to hear an accessment of the quality of Sanyo Denki 120mm's.........

Well they are rated 35 more cfm at only 4 more db. So even if I turn the fan down with my controller it will still blow more per db than a 69 cfm one.
...plus they are only 4.99 on ebay from the guy everone seems to be buying them from

Sanyo denkis are supposed to have nice static pressure, I am eager as well to test them out.

I have heard this as well, although I have never used them.
If they start and run well @ 5-7v you may have a winner.
