XP 1700+ guaranteed @ 2,333 MHz for $90

Found this at www.xtwerkz.com/xtreme_cpus.htm and ordered one last week. It is an OEM XP 1700+ Thoroughbred B that xtwerkz has tested at 2,333 MHz.

I am extremely happy with it so far. I know it was $40 more than it should have been, but I¡¦d like to think that I got a cherry. ?º My rig is as follows:

Epox 8rda+ rev 1.1
512MB of TwinMos pc3200
MSI Geforce4 4200
Thermal Take Volcano 6

I can boot to windows at 2484 MHz or 216MHz*11.5 but as soon as I run 3dmark or start a graphics intensive game, it crashes.. I think I need to increase the voltage to the Vdimm higher than what the 8rda+ is letting me. Oh well, guess that I have to do the memory voltage mod to it. I have to lower it to 210*11.5 (2415Mhz) for it to be stable for everyday use. The Vcpu is 1.85 volts and my temp. with the POS Volcano are OK @ 50C, waiting to put together a watercooled setup so that should help things. For those of you that have any suggestions, please, let me know. It has been a long time since I upgraded a computer.

As far as the reliability of Xtreme Tek Werkz.. I don¡¦t know. They had only 2 people respond via www.reselleratings.com, and it seemed like they had a good experience. You have to deal with Paypal though, they took 5 days to transfer money from my checking account; felt like forever. I figure that Xtreme is a branch of a larger company that is cherry picking from their stock of 1700+¡¦s, or at least that¡¦s what I would do.

So what do you think? Was I a fool for paying almost twice as much? At least the CPU can do as advertised and even more.

Later

i don't know man, the 2100 xp is cheaper than that. but heck, if it's guaranteed to hit 2333.

so you're @ 1.85 vcore now?

if you're happy with your purchase than it's a good one.

this sounds like a commercial...

2 feedbacks at resellerratings.com is nothing to go on.

Yeah, and a bad commercial at that.. sorry.

But hey, I have been look at andandtech's hot deals for a long time and I am just trying to return the favor.

For me, it was worth the 40 bucks in not worrying about getting an unfriendly 1700.

2.333GHz should be XP2800 or so, which makes $90 for one a steal.

Yes, OEM 1700 and 2100s are cheaper. But most of them won't hit this high. My 2100s won't.

Had this been around a month ago, I would have been all over it instead of being stuck at a measly 2.26GHz.

I don't think this is a good deal at all. You can get specific steppings at excalibur or at a local store and while not guaranteed to hit 2.33, you'll get darn close.

Sometimes I wonder why people pay $200 to cool a $50 CPU that is overclocked to X.X GHz when
you can buy a real X.X GHz cpu, which requires no additional noisy fans, for only $200.

I miss the days of the Celeron 300MHz which oc'd to 800MHz with just a BIOS tweak and a $2 heatsink.

Paying extra $$$ for noisy fans, rounded cables, peltier heat sinks, arctic silver
thermal compound, special case, blow holes, water cooling, etc etc kills the hot deal.

excal or gameve both will give you gauranteed stepping but gameve uses DU and not DL while excal has DL's they charge around 75-80 I think

might as well get this one with the gaurantee

BUT!!

what most of you need is somebody who will change the multiplier for you so you dont have to go above 150 FSB to hit 2250 MHZ

and by the way guys do your research a 2.33 ghz clock speed is about a 2800-2900+ processor

don't really know where you're getting the $200 part. h20? the best air cool hsf on the market right now is slk800, about $35 or sk7, about $20. I don't know man, even if I wasn't ocing, I'd spend at least $25 bones on cooling.

Basically because it DOESN'T cost $200 bucks and it's not nearly as noisy as you think. Stop pulling #'s out of your ass.

And watercooling isn't even $200 anymore... =P I did some custom mods on my case to cool it more for free, but... Unfortunately how the comp is running in a nearly closed environment so my case mods are useless =P. Stupid computer desk. Shoulda made my own.

I don't know any 2100+ B (high-end B) that wouldn't go over 2333mhz.

save your money and get a 2100+ instead.

Never!!! Work sucks! Geeking out is a blast!

On a serious note- my loudest fan is 21dB. Here's my cost:
Slk-800 w/panaflo, SVC GC-68 w/panaflo (for gpu) and panaflos for case: $80.
2100+ @2300MHz: $97 (got stepping I wanted at eXcaliber awhile back, will do 2400MHz stable)
Total: $187.

For me that is a good price. And I enjoyed learning how to do this. It wouldn't have been as much fun to buy a 2800+ and just drop it in there, and it would have cost more.

they smoke with reatil air cooling, you can get 2 ghz out of that alone...

This is what some of them can do...

Until today 23rd March 2003, the most overclockable Thoroughbred JIUHB 1700+ are as follow:-

Stepping Code Average OC @ 1.6v Vcore Average OC @ 1.9v Vcore
0302 XPCW UT3C 2GHz 2400+ 2.25GHz 2800+
0302 MPMW UT3C 2.2GHz 2700+ 2.4GHz 3100+
0304 MPM UT3C 2.2GHz 2700+ 2.4GHz 3100+

I think the people that could get 800 MHz out of a Celeron 300 was probably incredibly small in number. Almost everyone could get 450 MHz, and other people could get it a little higher by overclocking the memory bus speed from 100 MHz, but they also risked overclocking other parts of the computer, like the PCI/AGP bus instead of just the CPU. A 300 at 800 with little effort, I don't think so.

Isn't it wierd how the myth of this CPU gets distorted over time. At the time, going from 300 MHz with 66 MHz bus speed to 450 MHz with 100 MHz bus speed was a big leap, probably close to doubling the CPU. But now people have to inflate it and say it got 800 MHz with little effort, which absolutely was not true.
