for some reason my xp runs really hot. it uses the stock heatsink/fan and uses an Aopen case /w 250watts PSU. i runs my computer almost 24/7. the lowest temp i've seen is when i let the computer off for like several hours, then it'll be @ ~41c when starting up. i am thinking about buying 3 fans, one 80x80 in the front blowing in, and then two 70x70 in the back blowing out. would that help?
btw, i know about arctic silver and thermal tek fan, but after i fried $226 last time, i dont really wanna mess w/ heatsink/fan for a while.
thanks!

my config:
xp 1800+
256mb PC2100
Epox kt333
stock heatsink/fan
runs window xp pro edition
trident image 975 -_-
onboar sound
30.8 WD digital hd @5400 RPM
etc.

The EPoX KT333-based boards read the actual CPU-core diode, instead of using a socket thermistor like all the other KT333 boards. 61C is a very good temperature for a true core reading.

On a different note, 250W is on the skimpy side for an AthlonXP-based system... might want to consider an upgrade when you're able to...

I agree about the 250 watt psu; that's a little small for an Athlon. Another thing you can try is to back your vcore voltage down a little bit and see if your rig still runs stable. I have 1 dedicated Folding@Home rig, an XP1900, that I was able to back the vcore down to 1.65 volts and still retain full system stability and it helped lower temps 5-8° C. Later on, I would also suggest an better hsf than the stock one, something like an AX7, Alpha 8045 or Swiftech MCX462 with around a 45-50 cfm fan for it.

Unless he's having problems that can be specifically linked to the psu, I wouldn't both upgrading it. The whole psu thing seems to be exaggerated. I've run xp systems with a 200 watt psu just fine with no problems. 250 watts should be plenty.

Before upgrading the heatsink, check the following:

1. What is your ambient room temp, because that can certainly have an effect on temps.

2. Check to make sure your heatsink is seated properly, including making sure to use ASII, ASIII or thermal tape.

3. Play around with the case fan air flow direction ... you never know.

4. Make sure the CPU heatsink fan is actually moving.

5. Leave the PC case door off and see what your temps are - at the same time, point a house fan at the CPU and see if the temp changes.

If no luck, try a recommended heatsink from a reputable review.

My XP 1800+ is 35C at idle (not OC'd). I am using a Millenium Glaciator (hunk of copper) in an Antec SX830.
