Hey i just recently OC'd my 2500 (1.83) to a 3200.. its running exactly at 2.204. I monitered the cooling on idle, running at about 120F. I decided to load a game, and and as it was running *for about 1 min* it sends me to the desktop and the game shut off. *game was Mafia* I went into CS and played for about 2 min and it did the same, sent me to the desktop. So i looked at the temp and it was at 135, which in my opinion is very respectable. I'm running a Volcano 11, asus a7n8x 2.0, xp 2500 barton, 9700 pro and 512 corsair XMS ddr400. Prior to the OC'ing i had no probs. So obviously its the oc'ing, but its not overheating so im trying to figure out what the prob is. Thanks

PS whats a good *very simple* program out there to change your fsb from the desktop?
And a tool to moniter your cpu heat?

Increase the CPU voltage for beginners.

Ok, increased the voltage from 1.650 to 1.675 *next level up* Result of the increase in voltage... went into mafia, played for a little bit longer, than it locked up on me had to power down. Checked the temp of the cpu.. it was 145F, the mobo was running a 75F.

Any suggestions?

Your going to have to bump the voltage to 1.725, maybe a little higher. You will definately need to improve your cooling solution because your cpu temp is gonna get hotter at higher voltage.

i just ran a program called burnin.... im sure youve heard of it, it ran for 10 min straight no probs or errors. My cooling solution is supposed to be able to support up to xp 3200. the volcano 11. is it not gonna be enough? Man, i always have wanted water cooling.. muahaha

i just changed the vcore to 1.70 and shutdown on me pretty quick... it was running at 160. What is the stock voltage on a xp 3200? that might be my problem is the cooler is advertising stock voltage and not other voltages. What do you suggest as a fan cooler for now until i can afford water cooling? And what are some good basic water cooling units for cpu and gpu?

My XP2500 runs 2.2 Ghz on 1.65 volts... it's a week 24. You're doing this backwards... what you should be doing is setting the FSB at 200, and setting the multiplier at 10... leave the voltage stock, see if it's stable... if it is, increase the multiplier to 10.5... if it's not stable, increase the voltage until it is. If your temps get too high, then back down to the lowest stable voltage at the current clock speed.
Volcano's suck... get a good thermalright SK-7 or SLK-800. I'm using the SK-7 with a cheap 70mm 4000 RPM fan I took off an old heatsink for a 1.2 Ghz Athlon. My diode temps are normally 50C or less... a diode reading is most accurate, however, if I was to go by the probe in the socket, that's reading 43C. Unless you've set up your monitoring program to take diode readings, it's taking socket readings... so ad about 5 degrees C to the socket temp and that's what the true temp of your core is.
Oh by the way... 2-2-2-5 is pretty tight, even for XMS PC3200... I'd try relaxing the RAM timing and see if it becomes more stable... maybe try 2-3-3-6.

FSB - 200
Multi - 10.5
Vcore - 1.650

Stabily running at 2.104, or xp 3000

Thanks guys preciate it... it seems to be running cool too. Are there any good programs to moniter cpu heat from the desktop?

I would run Prime95 and Memtest for 12-24 hours to test for stability. If it fails, back to the drawing board.

If so, please post your results.

In another post a guy seemed to be having some not so good results.

Use Motherboard Monitor 5... it's capable of reading temps from the thermal diode, which is what you want.

Get it here.

i use speedfan to monitor temps.

i'm at 1800+ @ 2.4ghz at 1.7v. slk-800 with 92mm zalman fan. haven't gone higher because its a pain to mess with on my m/b, i'm happy for now.

not sure if you have a barton though. depends on stepping too. go to overclockers.com forums and search for your stepping for better help.

It's an XP2500, it's a Barton.

Which sensor reports the diode setting? I hunted around until I got the temp reading that matched the Winbond stuff that came with the mobo, but running both at the same time gets alarms and FUBARs the MBM5.

I have my 2500 @ 2.3ghz (200x11.5 with the core @1.85v) the hottest its ever been with load is 42. It usually is idles at below 30. btw, its rock solid stable running prime or anything.

I'm using the one called W83L785TS-S Diode

Yeah, they don't like eachother... just use MBM... it does everything Asus Probe can, and more.

hmm, well, my barton with the retail heatsink had problems running at 3200+ unless I increased to 1.75v, my temps were comparable to yours, about 135F to 147F. The heatsink I got had a copper insert. I switched to my AX-7 and of couse my temps were lower, about 102F at idle, and it now runs at 3200+ at default 1.65v, and its much more stable than ever before.

Temp does affect the heat, even if it's not extremely overheating.

Don't forget, overclocking is not guaranteed just because someone else with a similar processor got certain results. It can vary from CPU to CPU, even from the same production batch... I can't remember who said it, but someone here said "all silicon is not created equal." I would expect the variance to be more in the 10-50 Mhz range... but I'm sure when a processor is rated for 1.83 Ghz, there maybe some capable of no more than 2.0, or no more than 2.2, or no more than 2.4... it's the luck of the draw... although the majority of XP2500's have been able to hit 2.2 Ghz with enough voltage and with good RAM and good cooling, some may go higher, and some may not get to 2.2.

you really need to do some more stability testing...

10 minutes of a burn in isn't good enough at all...

like people said... run prime95 for at the bare minimum 6 hours

and run 11 complete loops of memtest86 using options... c-1-2-.... argh... can't remember... hehehe....

just be sure to turn on cache for all tests and run ALL tests

okay...
