I am upgrading my system in about a week and I am wondering what fellow Anandtech gamers opinions are on this topic. I have 98se right now and it is ok but something new would be nice.

my new rig should look like this:
xp333-r, 1800+, 256 kingmax 2700, lite-on 32x10x40, viper 2 , on board sound

I know, i know viper 2 is an old, poorly supported card but i can't afford to upgrade that yet. Actually i really dont have any complaints about my viper 2. Will get ti200 when it probably hits $100.

Games i play are UT, CS, Red alert2, Battle Realms, SC, RTCW--but i really don't want to be too limited to what i play. I want to be able to buy any PC game and have it play on my comp. That being said I wanted to get XP too but I hear it has compatibility issues. If there is a list of known software that doesn't work with XP it would be invaluable. I could check what is on the list and see if i can live without it.

How is 2000? I would be willing to get that as a compromise if it is good enough.

Those games will run fine under Windows 2000, but they should run fine under XP also. I'm running CS and SC on my XP computer without any problems. If you already have Win2K, then use that, but if you're going to shell out money for an OS, you might as well get XP.

Use Win2k, I have found windows XP to be a poorly designed operating system, and very frustrating from the end-user's point of view. Windows 98SE is very good also, but 2000 is much more stable, and I know that I can play all my games on it (first-person shooters and such)

I've been using xp-pro since it came out and am very dissatisfied with it so far. All of my games either crash to the desktop or freeze. Don't get me wrong, other than my games, everything else is perfect. But I should've installed XP on a fat partition so as to double boot with my previous win98se. I recommend you install 98se first, then install XP as a dual boot. Until more games are made that say are supported in XP, I would stick to installing and playing on 98se.
