xp 64 debut clock speed

does anyone know *reliably* the clock speed on the athlon xp 64 when it comes out?

I've heard 2.0ghz, but last I know, the fastest running version was at comdex at 1.4ghz.

also, as a side note, what does everyone think a circa 2.0ghz will rate against, say, the 3.06 HT ?

According to the Inquirer, Opterons are being launched at 1.4GHz and 1.6GHz, with 1.8 and 2.0 soon after. I would think the Athlon64 would be launched at the same speeds.

The desktop version in theory could have quicker launch speeds due to it having less cache (256) which should help with initial yields. I would expect 1.6ghz from the desktop 256 version and 1.4 - 16 from the 1mb version. As the inquirer mentions AMD is better of launching early with slower speeds

ok, different question....what about 64-bit windows then? is microsoft holding off on that? waiting to see if xp 64's gonna be as big as we (read: I) want it to be?

1.4Ghz at launch and they expect to sclae it 1.2Ghz in less than a year!! One AMD has a killer chip Intel has no answer to or the people who make the roadmaps are full of BS. Figure Intel with the 20 stage pipeline in the P4, the perfect 180nm to 130nm switch only scaled the P4 1 Ghz in a year and a quater. How is AMD going to do it without switching to the 90nm process in mid 2003 when they arnt even planing to strat the switch over til late 2003 early 2004.

Intel only raised the clock by 1Ghz because that's all they needed to. There is nothing else as fast as a p4 3Ghz, and it gave them time to work on HT. I'm sure if AMD could have ramped the Athlon XP clock speed higher, Intel could have gotten another 500Mhz-1Ghz out of the P4 without any redesigns.

I read somewhere that Microsoft already has the OS working fine... they're getting driver support for it now since every driver has to be recompiled for a 64 bit OS, it's taking some time... I would expect to see the CPU before the OS... and even then I'd stay away from the OS for a while until bugs are fixed and service packs are released.

AMD already has 1.8GHz samples to developers as stated in anandtech's comedex article.. so definately past 2GHz.
AMD is fairly certain that they will be able to deliver Athlon 64 to the desktop at the end of Q1 2003 or the beginning of Q2 2003. Realistically, it will be closer to the start of Q2 2003 but we'll keep that tight range open for discussion. We reported earlier this week that current Athlon 64 samples are running at 1.4GHz (software and hardware developers just received 1.8GHz samples) and today AMD reassured us that they will have a performance leading part at launch. With the current 1.4GHz CPUs weighing in at around the speed of a 2.2GHz Pentium 4, we'd expect great things from a 2.0GHz processor on a fully tuned platform at launch; luckily AMD will be up against no faster than a 3.20GHz Pentium 4 at launch.

btw that article from inquirer is the server opteron version, and not clawhammer.

I woudl agree with that. After seeing that some people can get over 4GHz with some processors, with a bit of changing, I reckon Intel they could get another 500MHz out easily if they needed to. As it is, they seem to be taking the intelligent route and makign the chip have better technology (such as hving 2.4 HT chips) and good stuff lik ethat. Remember, as AMD fanboys would say, it's not all about speed
