XP 64 or Vista 64

Just curious about what operating system I should buy...

I'm constantly editing vary large photoshop files between 2 and 4 gb. I have 16gb in a new system I'm building and using the unused ram as a scratch disk for photoshop, along with a raid0 setup.

I am however at a loss as to which 64bit OS i should run...

I believe 64-bit Vista has more support, as 64-bit XP came out a bit too late... I am not too educated on the matter though.

More support? Windows XP x64 was based upon Windows 2003 64-bit. It has been out longer than Vista 64 too. Vista itself is still a problematic pile of crap.

I'd go with Windows XP x64 in a heartbeat.

Vista64 without a doubt, it's the current release, driver support is (now) good and it's not orphaned like the Xp64 platform. I've been running it (64bit) on a few systems since release, the 32bit systems that were 64bit capable all got upgraded. It's been solid as a rock.

Vista64, XP64 was like the red headed step child. It was released late and never properly supported. Vista64 is a much better supported OS.

Vista x64 is great,been using it since Jan,just installed my new Canon i4500 printer which is working great,don't listen to the anti-Vista members here, they like to post the same old FUD in every thread.

I used xp 64, and now I am using Vista 64. I believe going forward Vista will get more support than XP 64.

There is now pretty good support from most peripheral companies (except Apple - write a 64bit iPhone driver, please) on Vista 64. Server level stuff has pretty good support in XP x64, but in general you want to stick to Vista x64, which has better support today, and will get more support going forward.

There is nothign wrong with his statement. While MS will 'support' XP64 in that time frame, it will receive the same level of 'support' that (for example) Windows 2000 server does now. Vista is the current OS and has a longer runway (for both direct MS support and support from third parties) than XP64 ever had or will.

You forget Microsoft delays etc....besides its down to what is available now,your way of thinking is he should buy XP 64 bit then wait years and buy Vienna down the road too(so double cost).

However if he goes Vista x64 he can run that for a good 5-8 years or longer(way pass 2010) and by the time Vienna arrives Vista x64 will be in a very solid state anyway via SP packs etc..then he can upgrade to Vienna when he likes then since XP 64 bit would probably be more or less phased out unlike Vista/Vienna.

Personally no brainer,I actually have a XP 64 bit CD too in my desk(legal copy FYI)anyway in the end I went with Vista x64 due to the new added features/improvements plus longer future support then XP 64 bit...also I can get all my Vista x64 drivers for my hardware where's with XP 64 bit some of my hardware is not supported driver wise(some companies have dropped XP 64 bit support in favor of Vista x64).

Extended support is essentially security patches only. Service packs are pretty much never going to be released for a product in extended support. Same for non-security patches.

Yes you can. Extended support includes free security updates and paid support and that's about it. Hotfixes are only available with an extended support agreement, which are usually in the 10s of thousands of dollars range. Also, CDCRs (customer design change requests) are not accepted once a product is in extended support.

Seriously, anyone who believes that XP64 has more support and a longer life than Vista 64 at this point is trying arguing to argue.

Go with vista x64. Its got its problems but i dont think any of them will affect your photoshop work at all. Like someone amusingly said earlier xp 64 is like the red headed step child that noone likes. I gathered theres a lot of driver availability problems with xp 64.

I've used both (x64 & Vista x64).
Stay out of trouble (though minor) by going with Vista.

Why ?
Its got a proven track record of being stable.
Its time tested, which is something vista cannot be until its used for quite a while.

If your doing this for home use then maybe vista.
If your doing it for work or where your livelihood is at stake, xp.

Its not good to be working on a project , to have the OS develop some odd bug that had not been discovered yet.

As for the comments that x64 isn't used much, its not well supported.
I suggest you look at the content creation market for cg graphics.
Vista is like the plague there.
Its not wanted. Xp x64 works there and works well.

bsobel makes a valid point,64 bit OS never had the demand until Vista x64 arrived.

Also WHQL approved drivers only if companies submit both Vista x68/64 version to Microsoft tells you Microsoft is pushing for better support for Vista x64 then XP 64 bit ever had.
