XP-90 question

This may be a silly question, but which way is the fan supposed to be blowing on the top of the XP-90? I can make an arguement for it either way:

1) down into the HS: more airflow through the central parts of the HS, but blows hot air over the motherboard

2) up away from the HS: less airflow through the center of the HS, but the hot air is being pushed away from the other components and the cooler air is being drawn in from the sides.

I'm probably missing something but there didn't seem to be anything in the documentation that came with the XP-90.

Since the XP-90 is not shrouded down the sides, you will get better performance with the fan blowing down into the heatsink.
For the 'pull' method to work, a heatsink needs to have some sort of shrouding all the way down, with a specific air entry space only at the bottom of the heatsink, so that air will enter there and be pulled up the entire depth of the heatsink's fins.

well previous reply is especcially true if you have some serious power takeing heat away from the MB in the back .. meaning liek a 120mm fan in the rear or 2 80 mm ones

I've seen it tested both ways, the heatsink peforms roughly the same either way, but having the fan pull air up through it can promotes better air flow and can lower system temps.

Why don't you try both and tell us? The tests I've read say that pointed down gives you 4 or 5C lower, but either way they work well.

i use the XP90 on my 3200+ @2.45 in a praetorian case. at idle my comp does 33 when the fan sucks away and 30 when the fan blows onto the hs. my mobo ambient temps are all the same 22-23. when i have the cover on the case idle is at 34. i prefer the fan blowing down onto the hs.
