I wanna know too! Would XP be compatible with Win9x games? My Win2k have occasional problems with games, especially EAsports titles.

WOOHOO...WaSP rulz! Would you let me slide my next ticket if I become your friend?

XP will be the next successor to 9x, so you can bet that companies will develop games for it. As of current games, i think only the ones that run in 2k will run in XP

It is supposed to run all Win9x games/applications too but it really depends on the game/application.
Although you probably can get everything to run under WinXP (even Dos stuff).
Someone even got Wolfenstein 3-D and DOOM to run under WinXP....

it runs many more games than win2k does right now..for example:
All my EA SPORTS games now run on winxp...did not run on win2k
All my TombRadaider titles now run on xp...did not run on win2k
etc..etc...etc...

I am running a slightly older Beta XP at home, and I have had no problems with any games, save for the fact that I forgot to turn off a lot of the garbage that XP runs in the background.

Also, if you click on the Properties for a shortcut to an Executable, there is generally a compatibility tab, where you can choose what compatibility mode XP should run the program in, from Win95 to WinNT4SP6 I believe.

XP is NOT a successor to 9x. The 9x kernel is dead.

That's right. Basically, XP has all core components from Win2k, including the graphic portion (GDI). However, XP will come in 2 flavours: a Professional Edition is supposed to be an upgrade for Win2k Pro, and a Home Edition which is considered as an upgrade for WinMe. The differences between the 2 editions, i guess, is mainly the security portion of the OS. The Win9x path is dead because, as far as I know, XP does not have anything from Win9x or Me.

For old games and all "legacy" software and games, try to run in XP Compatible Mode (there is an icon with that name on XP desk top available).

Games run in XP. I haven't had any compatibility problems yet. Only problem is on some games its a bit laggy. There are also some known issues with games, that the OS tells you before you run it. I'm sure MS is ontop of the gaming side of XP, and it will be really good by the time its released.

HansXP: He said XP was the sucessor to 9x, not that is was 9x (as 95, 98, and Me are). With that statement he is correct. XP is replacing 9x as the home/general use OS; that works regardless of which kernel Xp is running (which is the NT/2k kernel).

Yep, the rule is basically anything that will run in 2k will run in xp, although more might as well. System shock 2 was easier to install in 2k, I didnt need to go hunting for that command line option.

Yesterday I tried to run some DOS-games just for the fun of it but I had some problems getting them to run.
I tried to get Theme Park and Transport Tycoon to run (I even went over to www.ntcompatible.com and got me their Soundtool for the DOS-box) but to no avail...
...the only luck I had was Theme Park but it ran only without sound.

That would be correct ^. If you were in XP, just as in 2K, there is no DOS emulation and while the game may run, you will have no sound. Now there are several "compatability" modes in XP and switching to them may enable support........I know it does for some things, but to be quite honest I haven't messed with any DOS games to know for sure!
