Doesnt IE8 just check to see what OS its on????? (If so you may be able to spoof the user agent when Installing IE8 so it THINKS it is on Win 7,etc)

dude111, your the 1 that drug me over to tapeheads. :sneaky:no, its the websites rejecting ie8 an lower running on xp. microsoft sends you to the same page no matter what link. have to make pc look like its win 7 ^ an ie9 . ie9 will not install on xp, as of yet, an last i found they are not going to change that. oh it appears the pc must be of their liking. my pc is fine, why replace it? opera can fool some sites an some have popup saying ie8 support ending. itll be where im going it wont. murfees law ...
someone has to be working on a fix, just have to find it.

IE8 works fine on my XP VM, but obviously websites that are designed with newer browsers in mind are going to run into problems being rendered properly on IE8 (though from what you're describing it seems like you're being sent to some sort of MS landing page instead?). If a customer wants to continue to run XP, then I just have them use Google Chrome or Firefox.

If what I wrote in brackets is what the OP is experiencing, please provide a link to a website where this problem occurs.

Asking to make sites that don't work on IE8 (because it's old and lacks newer features) somehow magically work is like asking how to pull a big rig trailer with a Smart Car. The answer is: you don't.

If you want to stick with XP, you'll need to use another browser that doesn't care about the operating system version, like Firefox or Chrome.

if you ask me the only reason for using explorer v8 is when your installing windows xp. since i have installed a few copies of windows xp i then used a decent browser like firefox, opera or chrome.

I kinda love these tinfoil hat conspiracies about how XP is fine and every OS released since is just a sleazy cash grab.

Windows XP is demonstrably insecure. It flat out does not support modern security features, it's full of vulnerabilities, and it is no longer being patched. The real answer here is unless you're running legacy software in a locked down VM, it's time to ditch XP. The world moves on.

I never saw the point of running IE, even in the XP era. It would always hang and was unstable and was always known as a huge security hole anyway. Just download Firefox and be done with it. Most Linux distros already come with Firefox and are very multi-boot friendly on a second partition so you don't have to use XP for internet at all (except for some old games maybe). I wouldn't call people who run IE6-8 "rebels", more like not very intelligent beings who don't know any better.

This is a troll post, most definitely.

Anyone using IE8 should be sued, the end.

XP is dead, has been dead for 7 or 8 years. It's unfortunately it's not the only thing that's dead. DEAD.

Many companies still use IE for internal use. they have many projects that are tied to IE8 constructs that apparently do not work with newer versions.

More than likely; your ATM still uses embedded XP to handle your transactions.

I have a client who's Windows app will not run on Windows 7.
It was built for XP and they do not wish to rewrite it; cost benefit analysis.
It also means that I have to use an older version of VS to support them.

windows xp became unsupported in april 2014 so it's not 7 or 8 years. millions of people still use windows xp because it's a great operating system.

I have the fortune of living in a country with one of the best ATM networks in the world.

It's pretty up to date security-wise, and the vast majority of it is running Unix and has been for a while now, if not from the beginning.

windows xp became unsupported in april 2014 so it's not 7 or 8 years. millions of people still use windows xp because it's a great operating system.
Let me put it to you this way: when Windows ME came out, back in 2000, it was already out of date by at least a year. It has nothing to do with quality or stability, as far as Windows ME went, it was all about Windows 2000, released a year before, which was basically Windows XP, released a year after.

Windows XP was a good enough OS. Its SP2 was a good enough upgrade, but it was lagging behind by them already, security wise. As soon as Windows Vista was released, as crappy as it was, it rendered Windows XP outdated. It lived on for a while, and for a while it was a good enough choice, but as soon as Windows 7 hit the shelves, Windows XP had no reason to exist. That was 2009, and not considering Windows Vista SP1 had been released a year before, and it itself rendered Windows XP outdated, for the most part.

So yeah. Maybe not 8 years, did my math wrong. 6 or 7 years out of date, Windows XP. And I'm not being mean.

Time to upgrade?
You're using Internet Explorer 8, the latest browser for Windows XP. Support for Windows XP and Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP has ended.
Learn more
End of support for Windows XP and Internet Explorer 8
Internet Explorer 8
As of April 8, 2014, technical assistance for Windows XP and Internet Explorer 8 is no longer available, including automatic updates and security patches that help protect your PC.
If you continue to use Windows XP and Internet Explorer 8 now that support has ended, your computer will still work but it might become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses. If your Windows XP PC is connected to the Internet and you use Internet Explorer 8 to surf the web after support has ended, you might be exposing your PC to additional threats.

So, why aren't you using another browser? Paypal on FF/XP works fine for me.

Probably because the site designers thought "no-one is using anything older than IE8, and in case anyone is using something as ancient as IE8, we had better post a warning to them"

When I log in with IE8/XP to paypal.co.uk, it evidently tries to do viewport stuff which I'm sure that IE8 can't handle, then on the main page there's a lot of broken site design (overlapping test and images all over the place). I also get the yellow message at the top of the page (which in case the OP hasn't realised it, that's a message that paypal have designed into their website, it's not MS doing that).

This thread is bizarre.

As for the person trying to justify XP with the whole "program only runs in XP, not 7" argument. 7 Pro will emulate that. There is literally no excuse.

Customer is always right. And being that they do not have 7 Pro; they are SOL
Also, some may not want to run in an emulation mode - they have something that they are comfortable in and know how to utilize it efficiently
