XP and maxtor 80gig ata133 install problem.

I am helping a friend install a new 80gig maxtor, it came with a free promise ata133 pci card, we installed the card and harddrive no problem, when we decided to install xp it says there is no harddisk on the machine (win98 worked fine), now going over maxtor's documentation it says any OS using the NT kernal will not recognize the ata133 card untill you install the driver, but that is all it said, it didn't tell me where to go to find the driver. and when to install it on a fresh format?! I'm lost I have other ways but I was hoping for an quick fix.... anyone have any ideas?!

I used maxblast, and got it to format with ntfs... tried again and get a software crc error or something! I am at work and can't remember exactly what the error said!

the driver you want should be on the disk that came with the ata card. when XP starts to install it will say to press a key (think it's F6), to install 3rd party drivers.
or you could install the drive on the MB's IDE channel. install XP. install the card , leaving the hard drive on the MB.then swap the HD over to the ata card.
then XP will allready have the driver. hope this works for you.

Thanks for your reply chuck340...I don't remember a driver disk being in the box, will have to doublecheck, if not, I'm sure i can get it off the internet somewhere!

chuckie be correct - you need to install the proper driver during the install. (F6 game)

Ok, I went thru this with my D740X 60 gig. First, you need to install the drive as a master on your primary ide controller. Second, go into your bios and have your system boot from the CD. As it's starting to load drivers, hit F6 It will ask you to insert a floppy containing the ata133 controller drivers. Load those drivers and your on your way. I would highly reccommend formatting and partitioning the drive using the XP cd and not that Maxblast BS. When XP's been loaded, shutdown and connect the drive to the ata133 controller. Go into your bios and have it boot from scsi/ata device. You should be up and runnin'.

easier way to do it:
conect the drive to standard ide controller on your motherboard
install xp as usual
shut down
install the ata133 card, turn on the comp and install its driver (don't connect your hd to ata 133 yet)
after all drivers are installed, shutdown and change the hd cable to ata133 card.
winxp should work correctly now
