XP: Autoplay setting won't "stick"

I can't figure out why, but everytime I insert a CD into my computer it opens that autoplay window asking what it should do. I have the "remember this setting" checked, but my settings won't stick. Any thoughts on what I should do?

Thanx!

I have the same problem. I want to get rid of it completely on all drives. Is there an easy way to do this? TIA.

I believe the "remember this setting" only works with that certain CD - XP will remember that CD (in the same way that the various media players will recognize and remember a music CD whose tracks you've identified) and disable Autoplay next time you insert that particular CD.

You can disable Autoplay completely for a certain drive - I'm on a 2K system at work right now so I can't check this - I think it's in one of the CD-ROM drive properties windows somewhere. Maybe through My Computer -> Properties -> Device Manager? If I can remember I'll check when I get home and post back - I've done it on my XP box at home, so I'll find it then.

I just searched for this because it was annoying the hell out of me. And I found a thread saying that if you download PowerToys for XP and install TweakUI, you can turn off Autoplay, or reconfigure it.

After you open TweakUI, go to My Computer -> Autoplay. Should fix you right up.

After the reminder, I checked and found that there's an Autoplay tab on the Properties window of the CD drive if you enter from My Computer. On that tab, there's a pull-down menu where you can select a CD type (music, DVD movie, etc.), and after you select a type, the window below it shows different actions the PC will take when you insert a CD of that type. One of those actions is "Take no action". That oughta do it. I'm using XP Pro and after setting this window, I never had to download PowerToys or TweakUI or anything, and the setting sticks - my DVD drive never autoplays, whether I put in a game disc, music, whatever. Hope that helps.
