Man i wanted to love winxp, i wanted it to better than 98se, i really wanted xp to be a better os. Sadly enough it wasn't. My 98se machine was rock solid stable, and so was xp when i had it. XP had a lot of cool GUI features that make it look a lot cooler than plain ol 98se. I like the networking options and the ease of use of xp as well. However, configuring xp is very difficult, things i could do in 2 mouse clicks take about 10 in xp. Now this is not enough to make me wanna change the os, it was the gaming performance that killed it. First off, there are no soundblaster live drivers or live ware that support the 4spkr output. Secondly, my graphical performance was significantly slower in RED FACTION, which is one of my fav. games right now. I tried all sorts of driver configs to no avail. I must say that XP has a lot going for it, but until the gaming performance is ironed out i'm sticking with 98se.

Hmmm, are latest drivers install? That makes no sense. XP is supposed to increase performance when compared to NT4 and 98se

Has anyone had the same performance in Win XP as 98se for gaming?, NOBODY has stated this, are you XP users hiding something?

I have better performance in XP and so do a lot of other people. If you judge it's gaming performance based on one game then you may be missing the boat.

we'll yeah, i'm gonna judge its performance on this game. I really like red faction and if XP can't even get playable framerates, then XP goes BYE BYE. It seems each successive OS from MS gets bloated and bloated and bloated. I still love 95 for its speed, too bad it ain't compatible with anything.

Both of my computers would lock up after exiting the game, does anybody else have

I'd personally wait until after October 25 when WinXP is officially released to render a judgement as most companies won't release their official XP drivers until then. Take Creative and ATi for example.

I can't speak for all WinXP users but i have had NO problems as far as compatibility goes. The only thing close is that the DIrectX 8.0 VIdeo Capture Update won't run, but that is because microsoft made it detect what OS you had before it would run the EXE, and when it detected that i had WinXP it said "You must have Win98, win2k etc" But that is not a problem with the OS. I play HL-CounterStrike, Quake3, UT, WolfMP, Emulators, Tribes2, and all the Apps I used on my Win2k machine. As far as performance differences...well I wouldn't know. This is a new PC that I started out with WinXP so I have no baseline. I did get 6648 3dMarks in 3dMark2001 with no overclocking, which is higher than the average 1.8p4 machine with similar specs.

Zulu-

Please share with us your extensive knowledge with XP that would allow you to call it a POS. Thanks in advance BTW...is a 3d mark 2001 score of 7328 in XP pretty good?....yep I too have zero problems with gaming in XP including Red Faction which was noted in the first post.

<< WOW a really cool GUI is a compelling reason to upgrade to this POS. >>

I can't stand it when ppl say things like that without any substance to their statement whatsoever. Either just "Un-educated" in such matters or if indeed he is, then "Immature" for sure.

:frown:

[Edit]

We will prolly get all the "well I'm a BETA tester for MS and the BUILD xxxx was appalling" line...LOL

Every new Windows need 1 full year before people can use it without too much problems. Every Windows need 1 year of patching before it can be good. Remember Windows98 ... Remember Windows2000 ...

So in my own opinion, everyone should stick with Win98 2nd EDITION or Windows 2000 PRO until November 2002. Thats it. During this year Microsoft will patch and repatch ans re-re-patch all the problems in Win XP and all the software and hardware companie will build nice new drivers for Win XP

Thats it ! Simple Isn't

XP is just win2000 dummied down for idiots who can't use a real os like win2kpro. Win2k pro is a much better OS than XP is because it offers better drivers and support. Plus win2k doesn't include all the bloatware.

The world is swifly getting on the XP wagon, though, whether you like it or not. In 1-2 years there won't be any support for Win9x nor Win2K. Either accept it, or go install Linux or OS X.

Obiwann - That is true I would have to agree, but MS did spend far more time BETA testing than it has in the past and "most" indepth reviews of the new OS say it's a must if you don't have Win2000 and are a Win98/ME user.
