Let me guess. You're using the FAT32 file system.

It's worth it to buy a good UPS for your computer, regardless of the file system you use.

NTFS? Ohh OK. You might want to run the manufacturer's diagnostic utility on your hard drive to see if you have some physical damage to it.

EXman, a hard drive diagnostic utility comes from the hard drive manufacturer, like Western Digital, IBM, Seagate, etc. These companies have the software available for download from their web site for use with and only with their hard drives.

In a previous reply, someone suggested you might be having memory problems. Memtest86 is memory testing software available for download for free.

For a hard drive utility to scan for defects and writing zeros to any hard drive I would recommend GWScan. You can download this from Gateways website for free. Its the same utility that WD ships with their drives only reprogramed to work with any HD out there. I used it the other day on an IBM drive and it worked fine. Here is a link that will start the download for ya, GWScan. Personally I use this and nothing else. Ohhh, and no I do not own a Gateway PC

Ohhh, forgot to tell ya. Since you are using the NTFS file system you will need to use win rar or something similar to open the file and then copy those files inside to a directory on your hard drive. Make a boot disk and then copy the said files onto that disk. Forgot all about that

PS: You prolly know how to make a boot disk in XP but just incase here are the instructions. Go as if you were going to format a flopy and on the screen with the format options there is a "Make MS Dos Start Up Disk" Option. Put a check in that box and click start.

Well I wouldn't blame XP for this, seems pretty obvious your power outage fcked up your system. Do you have a surge protector on it? A CMOS Checksum Error is caused by the cmos battery being dead and will reset the bios settings to the default everytime you restart or it could of been a 1 time thing caused by the outage.
