well i bought XP yesterday, and ever since 7 last night i have been trying to install it. First i tried to upgrade 98SE but everytime it checked disks for errors in the setup program, sure enough it found one it couldn't fix... so i boot 98SE and ran scandisk, it finds the error, fixes it and i try upgrading again... same thing! :| Now i am not too happy so i start deleting everything... Then i format (converted to NTFS) thinking "haha you can't corrupt files now you POS." well i was right and it copied files to the first restart, then it boots up shows splash screen (YAY) then BSOD!!?!! already? now it corrupted files after then install... this time (done it a few times, same result different files) it says there is a problem with "atapi.sys" and it stopped to protect my computer from damage. So i think maybe i can disable that... NOPE currupted registry when i tried using repair command prompt....

Anyone know whats going on? bad cd? stupid operator? need to pull out all cards first?

EDIT: guess you want hardware specs...
ABIT kt7a-raid (recent bios)]

dlink 530tx
2x maxtor 30.7gig in RAID 0
teac 16x10x40x
pioneer 106s 16x DVD

Well, let's see...
Did you make sure to hit F6 and specify the drivers for your highpoint controller during setup? Is it possible one of your drives is going bad? Have you tried installing on one drive without RAID? I had a computer do similar things to me trying to install Win2k due to bad ram, try Memtest86.

If all else fails... try Slackware 8.0

Just as somthing else to try, make sure you have proper cooling for that Athlon (I'm sure you do, just covering the basics) and are not overclocking. NT is more sensitive to CPU's running out of spec than Win 9x (at least in my expierence). I hope you get it figured out.

i tried that memtest program... it didn't find any errors.... its formatting one of the drives now.... i guess i could try underclocking CPU...

When you press F-6, you will soon be confronted with another screen asking for more options, if you press enter it will not work. Don't forger to press the letter S or else it will fail to load the drivers (that should be on, and in the floppy drive).

I have a Hot Rod 100 controller card that took some trial and error to get XP to load. XP ships with all of MS's digitally certified drivers so when I hit F6 and loaded the High Point drivers it hung when loading the OS. So I let XP load it own set of drivers for the card. High Point now has drivers for XP for controllers so I would just let it load it's own. Then after you get to the desktop try updating the driver. Honestly once I did this everything went very smooth and well. The card is recognized as a SCSI controller and is using the MS driver. My 2 cents but it worked for me. Sisoft gives some funky drive performance when benched but hopefully they will put out a patch for it.

I have pressed 'S' multiple times both letting XP use its own drivers for the raid controller and using the ones off the website, both produce similar results (not working, BSOD)

i have tried to install without the hdds in raid, didn't help, same error....

the stop errors produce nothing useful on microsofts site....

maybe its time for win98 again.... at least it will install (i hope :|)

Yeah, my Promise ATA-100 card was automatically loaded and configured when loading XP. No input on my part

Did you use the preinstall disk that the store is "supposed" to give to see if your system has the compatability to operate on your system? It will tell you what will and wont work.

I know this sounds far fetched, but a guy I know had a similar problem (file corruption error reports and BSODs) when he was trying to do a clean install of Windows 98. (yes, I know you are doing XP)

Anyway, his problem turned out to be BIOS settings on his MoBo (he was on a KT7-Raid) I cleared his CMOS settings and went page to page putting in the ones I remembered had worked for me when I was on that MoBo.

The only things I remember defaulting to a setting that was bad was the cacheing stuff. Make sure to disable anything having anything to do with shadowing (video or system) or BIOS cacheing. (sorry I can't remember the exact names)

Dont enable any of the enhanced performance stuff (4 page interleave, fast writes, etc...) until after you have the rest of the system stable. (this is a "just-to-be-safe" thingy)

Good luck!

That is what the BSOD told me to do... so i did it then, and did it again now and it still does the same thing.
thanks anyway... at least you tried

Are you trying to do an upgrade?

Here's what I would do, do a FDISK on the drive, wipe out everything. Don't create any drives or anything, boot from the XP CD and go.

I think what's going on is you have a drive about to go bad. Have you tried another HD?

Does the thing want to install when you remove all cards and stuff, except for the mobo, videocard, HD's (RAID or no RAID) and CD-ROM (or CD-RW) drive?
