XP Home or Professional

I'll soon be purchasing XP for my new build. The Home edition has served me well the last several years, but now I'm wondering if XP Professional is worth the extra $50. Is there a performance increase, or simply additional support for esoteric networking protocols and such that I probably won't use? I plan to game, use Dreamweaver and Photoshop, encode some video, and use professional audio software like Cubase and Wavelab. I use a wireless ethernet adapter but am otherwise not on a network. Any good reason to go with the professional edition? Thanks..

There's no performance difference between any of the XP SKUs. Anyone who tells you otherwise doesn't know WTF they are talking about.

No performance difference in any apps I know of. The main difference is in XP Pro's facility in managing networks and network security.

WinXP Pro supports Dual Processors also,, while XP Home does not.

Home does support multicore processors though. Just one physical CPU, no limit on cores.

And Pro is supported into 2013 because it's a professional-version OS and has an Extended Support phase to its lifecycle. I also like the ability to use local Group Policy, to not have to use Simple File Sharing, and Backup could have its uses for some people too.

Why not get a Mac, you'll be able to use both OS X and Windows Pro on it. Just my 2 cents.

umm.. no I wouldnt switch to mac, macs are not for gamers, and I dont care what you say otherwise

I have been using XP64 since it came out... but the drivers support is almost non-existant for some stuff so I do warn you to stray away from XP64... one plus to it is spyware doesnt really seem to be a problem, nor have I had a single virus on this computer since XP64

if you don any networking, pro is worth it...I hate simple file sharing.
