I am trying to Install Xp on my Newly UPgraded PC

I added :

Motherboard - Shuttle AK12A
CPU - AXP 1700+
HSF - Volcano 7+
PSU - Antec 400W

Kept

Memory - 640 MB PC-133
1- 256 Mb PC-133 (Infineon Chips)
1- 256 Mb PC-133 (Nec Chips)
1- 128 Mb PC-133 (Spectek)
Sound - Soundblaster PCI 128
Network - Intel 10/100 PCI
Video - ATI Raedon 64MB DDR w/VIVO
Contoller - Maxtor U-ATA - 100 Card
Case - 12 Bay Full tower
Hard Drives - Maxtor 13 Gb (primary)
Maxtor 10 GB (slave)
Maxtor 20 GB on maxtor (master)
IBM 45 GB on Maxtor(slave)
Optical Drives - Aopen 24*10*40 (slave)
Creative 12x DVD (master)

This machine was running XP on the old motherboard and CPU. Now sometimes it locks at detecting CPU, and sometimes it boots completly.

While I am installing windows it keeps telling me it cannot read files from the CD.

I tried to copy the files to the 2nd hard drive, and it locked up at 37% appx.

When I get home tonight I am trying with 1 stick of ram, and just the 13 GB hard drive, and the DVD Drive and try.

I think the motherboard is bad, but need to find out soon (Newegg.com - 30 day warranty)

I would not trash the mobo so fast.

XP does something funny when a previous o/s of XP was installed and I have not figured how or what it does.

This weekend, I bought a new 30gb hdd to install on a new system (this was an identical Maxtor 30gb that was being used on my computer).
To make the installation easy (I thought), I simply partitioned/formatted FAT32, etc , unplug my hdd and proceeded to do a fresh install on the new hdd.
Wxp Pro stopped like what you said. Got error 4 or something like that.

Tried again and again with no success. I then tried to restore the o/s image using a Drive Image clone of my installed XP partition. That failed also, even though it was successful only the day before, on this same machine (with another hdd).
I then plugged back my old hdd with XP on it, just to be sure it was still working.
I have a 5gb empty partition on that drive, so I tried to install XP to that partition. Same problem, error 4 . XP would not install on this mobo again, even though it is running XP fine.

Ok, thinking bad hdd.
So I took the new hdd put it in the new system that was running XP (on a 10gb hdd), unplugged the 10gb hdd, and proceeded to install XP on the new computer. To my surprise, I had no problem.
It installed on the 30gb hdd that Xp previously announced it to be faulty.

So you might rethink the bad mobo option.

I will also say that I did have a lot of trouble getting one of the 2 IDE channels to be recognized by dos upon boot up. Bios displayed the proper cdrom and hdd as masters in each of the 2 channels, but dos would not list one of the channels (cdrom). I had to swap channels to get Wxp to boot up and install. After XP installed enough stuff, it recognized the other channel. Even now, upon bootup, it is slow until windows comes up to recognize my hdd channel, dos will not.
This may be another post.

I have also had XP claim missing files. Then would install fine on another hdd, with no complaint.

It recognizes all of the devices, but stops transferring files in the middle of the install

I know the problem is the IDE controller on the board. Newegg has already given RMA #, and board is going back. (it also does not read all of my memory all of the time)
