XP install problem.

My dad was thinking about buying xp ugrade from local retail outlet and I told him I could get full oem version for same price and that it could upgrade his system just as well (and could be used on new computer also). So we got it.

But anytime we try to install or upgrade his system with xp the installation stops about 2% into copying files and says that it is unable to copy a file to the hdd. I can press "enter" to try again, "esc" to skip file, or "f3" to cancel installation. I tried to retry and sometimes after 1 or 2 presses it will continue installation to only find another file it can't copy with the same options. Sometimes no matter how many times I press enter it will not be able to copy file and I have to skip the file. I would say about 20-25 files have this problem throughout installation. I have tried upgrading his windows 98 and also formatting the hdd and doing fresh install of xp (with both FAT and NFTS). Nothing has worked. I was thinking about doing the fixmbr command, but a statement about the mbr being a nonconventional mbr comes up and I am worried about ruining his system from ever working. Maybe changing the mbr will prevent his oem restore disk from working.

When the install stops at a file it can't write it says something like--if copying files from a CD make sure the CD is in the drive or maybe the CD is damaged, contact your hardware vendor, blah, blah, blah... It is a brand new authentic version of Windows XP. I don't think the CD is damaged or unreadable. I may try a dual boot on my system just to verify that the disk is viable.

His OEM restore CD is able to install his Windows 98 (first edition btw). And he once borrowed standard Windows 98 se from a friend and that installed fine on his system.

His specs are p2 450, 256 p100 RAM, 13 gig hdd (not sure make), 4 or 8x dvd player.

Is this thing just too old or unconventional to put XP on?

Sounds like bad media.

Can you copy those files from the CD to your HD within Windows? Just do that to test and ensure the files are indeed readable.

I had a problem similar to that when installing XP on a machine. Turned out to be a bad stick of RAM that had just been put in the machine. As soon as I took it out, it installed without a hitch. Maybe start looking for a hardware problem - I'd start with trying a different cd-rom drive. The first step should be to check the disc itself in another machine though.

i also had a similar problem. the error indicated that the cd could not be read, but it turned out to be the BIOS on the motherboard. for some reason, the default BIOS installed did not allow WinXP to be loaded. I updated the BIOS and the install ran to completion. I am not saying that this is your problem, but try looking for a BIOS update for your motherboard, and if you find one, install it. but beware, some motherboards cant/will not allow XP to be loaded. this was the case with a Gateway, my cousins computer, it was a Know issue with Gateway, but of couse, since it was a OEM branded Motherboard (ie, no Manufacture information available) there were no BIOS updates, and none would ever be available.

I just had that problem today. Wouldn't find banana.ani. Thank god it was that, and not something else.

mine couldn't find driver.cab, and I have a feeling it is causing the cdrom problem I'm having here. but can't verify that because I do'nt know enough about the driver.cab file. will try updating bios though and reinstalling.

My CDROM had numerous problems also, to the point where it really botched an install. I bought the Disk Doctor from Best Buy and used it (on a $300 OS disk too!), but now it works fine. Just my two cents...

Well I got the problem fixed.

Bad stick of RAM was probably the culprit.

But at the same time there is XP utility when installing from windows that asks to check internet for downloads. Which I did and got a 6 floppy boot program for xp. The 6 disks may have helped XP identify my dad's computer as a Compaq and adjusted for its oem components.

Unfortunately I replaced the RAM and used the 6 disks at same time so I don't know what was the real problem.
