It will ONLY work if you have a hotmail (@hotmail or @msn) email account and are using MSN Explorer/MSN Messenger to check them. AFAIK it won't work with a third party (your ISP, freemail, whatever) through Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, Pegasus or any other email client.

It will work with Outlook Express provided you do the following:

a) Establish your POP e-mail account in Outlook Express

b) Use that POP account as your Microsoft Passport login information

c) DON'T log off! Switch users only. If you're logged out of your account, you're logged off of your Passport account too. I assume that when you use your POP e-mail address as your MS Passport address, that it does a basic telnet style command to your mailbox you setup to see how many messages you have waiting or something. Works fine for me.
