to date i still believe that XP is the better system to game on but will XP run on an i7 system.........theoritically is should but will there be drivers for XP (motherboard, chip issues?) with 6 slots and filling three of them up for maximum performance (1Gb each) that would still put us below the 4Gb limit of a 32 bit OS then add in a 1Gb 4870 or 4850 and that puts us at the wall with 4Gb of total memory. So will XP run on a i7 system or do i just go with Vista 64 and load up on memory. mind you i prefer XP over Vista........no flame wars just answers.

Thanks Guys

Both EVGA's and MSI's sites list drivers for both WinXP and Vista for their X58 boards (here and here, respectively). I didn't check any others, but I'd be willing to bet they do too. Given Vista's relatively slow uptake it would be foolish for motherboard manufacturers not to support XP.

Just go with Vista 64, fill it up with 12GB and be happy. And I will be honest. I am not entirely sure if XP would be a good fit for the i7. It may not even recognize over 2 cores.

Edit: Ok Windows XP should be able to see the 4 cores in i7 fine. They license it on a per socket basis. XP equals 2 sockets. Doesnt matter how many cores per socket.

I still say go with Vista 64.

Go with Vista 64. Performance differences is a non issue. You're giving up way too much memory with XP. People should only debate this choice with an older P4 or a single core chip or older chipsets, really. I'm serious. Your setup is way too new to use an 8-year-old OS. Upgrade to 7 when it comes out.

chain your PC to your bed before you turn it on, mate....it will fly out of your room! i wouldnt waste my money on Vista even if i had lots of cash. especially with MS rushing a replacement.

my 2¢, of course.

It should run just fine, however as others have said, if you are going to get such high end hardware, might as well use an OS that supports their features.

You could stop gap with XP until 7 is released, but thats about a year away. Go with Vista 64, there really isn't any reason not to until you have some ancient work-related application that only runs on XP or older.

An I7 really needs a 64 bit OS. Vista 64 is a much better choice than XP64. Dell's XPS730 doesn't even offer XP as an option.

I'd go for Vista 64. XP will probably work but it'll limit your options. If you're worried about a performance difference, that was mostly from crappy manufacturer drivers at launch. Those kinks have been worked out.
