XP only allows one burner to be enabled at a time.

This is a strange one. I have a CD-RW and a DVD-RW in my system runnning XP PRO SP2. Never had any problems with the drives until this morning. The problem could have been there before as it has been several weeks since I have burned anything on this computer. When I put in a CD-R I got an error stating, E:\ is not accessible Incorrect Function. I was getting that on both the CD-RW and DVD-RW so I did some searching and found some information regarding registry issues. The resolutions were regarding getting Windows not recognizing them as writeable drives. Both of these drives have the recording tab in the properties and I can enable the recording.

But, when I enable one it disables the other. So, at this point I can only have one enabled at a time which is very frustrating. I don't want to have to go into the properties each time I want to record on the other device.

Anyone have any ideas on what I can do to fix this?

System Details.

AMD Athlon 1000
Asus A7v133C MOBO
768mb PC133
Plextor 40X SCSI CD-R
Liteon 52x 24X 52X CD-RW
Khypermedia DVD-RW drive
MAxtor 160GB UATA HD X2

I'm not using Roxio or Nero. Sonic's DLA program is installed, but is disabled.

I am not sure if this applies to you, but I was having similar problems after the installation of sp2, after I updated my software and on one drive my firmware, both worked.

Which software did you upgrade? I will also look at upgrading the firmware for the drives and see if that helps.

The hard part is that I cannot say for sure they were both working after installing SP2 so that may be when the problem started.

Keep the tips coming.

can you see anything in event viewer?

There may be something that springs up as an error, then makes something else revert back to another something or other setting!!!!?!!!!

I did read a post on another board that says that you can only have CD-recording enabled on one drive at a time.

Can anyone confirm that this is in fact correct?

I checked my logs and there are no errors or problems. The only events corresponding to the CD burners is IMAPI being stopped and started. Does nayone else have the same problem and if so, is there a known fix.

I am running XP Pro with SP2 and have a Plextor DVD+-RW and Lite ON CD/RW and both work fine. I use them regularly. They are on the same channel (DVD/RW is Master, CDRW is slave) on Asus A7N8X Secondary IDE. Never had an issue. I would try uninstalling one and then reinstalling and see what happens.

I'll be changing the MOBO out soon to a k7s5a to take advantage of a XP2000 I have lying around.. Maybe the ECS mobo doesn't allow both drivers to be writeable at the same time?

I tend to not think it is the hardware, but you never know. When I do the switch to the new MOBO I will be installing a new HD as well and putting on a fresh install of XP PRO.

Right now the computer has sonic DLA on it, but it has been disabled as I am not a fan of DLA since I forgot to close some discs many moons ago and was not able to recover the data. I have NERO, but have not installed it as I know that I will be doing a clean install at that time. Perhaps I should install NERO now to see if it fixes the problem?

I forgot to add that I use Nero for most burning tasks, but have occasionally used the XP built in stuff. It could be the Sonic DLA. Please let us know after you swap out the mobo.

Internal burners use a lot of the CPU. Externals do not. I suspect that more than one burner could be used if external, but not internal.

I learned a long time ago - when burning, do not do anything else. Go have a cup of coffee.

I was fooling around with trying to get windows to let me turn on recording for both drives. It wouldn't let me, and my CD burning software would only see one burner.

I unchecked the recording option for both drives in window's properties.

Then I uninstalled both drives and let windows redetect them.

I left the record option unchecked for both drives.

Now the burner software sees both drives and I can burn with both drives.

I did not want to use both at the same time, but I don't want to have to check a box in the properties each time I want to use the other burner.

LTC8K6,

I'll give that a try and see what happens. while I am at it I am going to uninstall sonic DLA
