XP, or 98SE?

I am about to finish construction on 2 new computers (build specs are in my signature). I know I have to run XP to use the hyperthreading feature of the boards & processors. I have a XP Home upgrade, but not the origional install software. To use what I already have, I'd have to install 98SE and upgrade to XP Home. Should I install 98SE and upgrade to XP Home or buy a new install XP? If I buy, which XP is best - Home($91@newegg), or Pro($135@newegg)? (I use my computers on a LAN with a total of 5 computers for broadband internet access and multiplayer gaming.) What would the benefits of XP be over 98SE or ME, and would they even run in this system with, for example, the SATA drives (besides hyperthreading)?

I am not going to get into the various reasons why XP is *much* better than 98, but suffice it to say that if the machine is capable of running XP (which yours, of course, are), it should be running it over anything else. I am not sure of the licensing details of hyperthreading support on Home, but for the price difference, the Remote Desktop capability of XP Pro is well worth it. Hope this helps.

You can do a clean install using your XP upgrade CD. At some point during the install, you will be prompted to insert your 98 CD for upgrade verification. It is not necessary to install 98 first, however.

Do your self a favor and get Pro. Home is missing some features that can come in handy.

You could always dual boot.

Here's something the sys. admin. at my office told me today ( a friend of mine wants to upgrade from Win98 SE to XP) : for Win 98 SE, XP Pro is not supported???

How true is that? Any links/sources that tell otherwise ?

Windows 98 should be fine for an upgrade.
