This sounds really dumb....

I was applying Arctic Silver on my XP1900+ when it put on WAAAAY too much and it flowed off the core (onto the brown part of the CPU). Now I tried using alchohol and nail polish remover to clean it up, but it seems to make it worse - it is now smudged onto about 60% of the surface area, close to some of the bridges...

How do I get this stuff off? and will it be usable as it is now?

Arctic silver is supposedly non-conductive. SO even if it contacts the bridges, it shouldnt matter.

Now, personally I would just keep scrubbing. Alcohol and/or acetone should have removed the silver paste. Dunno why it didnt. But in case ya cant get it all off, dont worry about it.
Remember, you only need a TINY bit. THen spread it around the core. THen use a TINY bit on the heatsink, and spread it across with a razor blade.

Use goo gone or finger nail polish remover (with acetone) and let it soak. I find using goo gone to get the majority of it off and then use the finger nail polish remover to get the remaining artic silver works the best

Speaking of spilling thermal compound, I wonder if it would be a good idea to mask off the bridges with some scotch tape beforehand, just to make sure. Any thoughts? Also, would it be a bad idea to leave it on when the processor is running?

Covering the bridges is not necesarry unless you KNOW you're a complete klutz and you WILL spill a lot. I recommend (if you feel insecure about your "squirting" capabilities) to try it out on a paper towel first so you can gauge the amount of pressure needed to get the right amount out. Wasting that tiny bit is better than squeezing half the tube out on yourself later.
