Is there a difference between XP Pro,oem and retail?I installed office 2000,and outlook 2000 will not install.I get the message :

Cannot start Microsoft Outlook.Outlook cannot be configured because Administrator privileges are required for you to install some types of software on this computer. Before you can use Outlook, you must either log on to your computer as an Administrator and finish configuring Outlook,or ask your system Administrator to configure Outlook e-mail support for you.

I can run-as administrator and get the same message.I have XP Pro , OEMversion.Any ideas??I have outlook express, and don`t really need the extra features, but it irritates me not installing. Thanks in advance

Yes, there is a difference between OEM and retail. Retail is what you purchase in the store, while OEM is direct from Microsoft and usually comes with a computer as an example.

There are different versions, or builds though of XP that specify what version it is. Build 2600 is the best of them all!

When installing Windows XP, and you are given the option of setting up an Adminstrator account or allowing Administrator priveleges with the User account you set up.

Hope that helps some.

However comma, (sigh), OEM or retail should have -no- problem what so ever when installing software including MS Office. I do not know why it won't install for you but it should not be related to your version of XP.

My next step would be to totally uninstall your Office 2K, COMPLETELY, reboot, and run the install again.

I must ask however, did you do a clean/new install of XP or an 'upgrade' from a previous version of Windows? What you are describing is one of the biggest problems that people doing an OS 'upgrade' report.

cookj, as far as I know, there are no differences in the operating system between the Retail and OEM version. I'm sure software that works on one will work on the other.

you need to login as Administrator. then right click your C: drive and go to the Security Tab. Add Administrator --> right under that box you will see another box that says: Permissions. make sure all the boxes are checked for administrator. --> then click apply.. --> now click the Advance button --> under Permission Entries see if adminstrator is there. if it is not then add the administrator --> then click on Administrator then click on the View/Edit button. make sure everything is checked so oyu can have control of the file system. --> now click the tab that says Owner. then click on the Administrator and check the box that says Replace Owner on subcontainers and objects. --> now click apply till you only get the OK button for c: PROPERTIES. that should be it. i would reboot XP. now try installing Outlook 2000 when you are logged on as Adminstrator.

have fun...

I am the only user,I don`t have the option to switch to administrator(the way I installed it last time)instead of the security option,it`s sharing and security, with no option to add administrator.I am the administrator by what it says .
