So my school FINALLY jumped on the bandwagon and started giving students discounts on Microsoft Software - Office, Windows etc.

They have an upgrade (not full) edition of XP Pro SP2 that they branded "student edition" but that doesn't mention any differences, anyone know of any differences?

I'm thinking about jumpin on the $99 xp pro bandwagon and getting rid of MCE that came with my compaq....

It's exactly the same, but you are supposed to cease using it once you are no longer a student.

Meh. When you're done with school, you'll be upgrading to Vista anyways, so buy the student edition now.

No, clean install from MCE is required. Also MCE is pretty close to the Pro feature set, what do you think you'll gain by doing this?

Wait - that's not really a special deal at all! Several years ago I bought XP Pro upgrade academic from Newegg for $85.

Where did you hear that? Can you link to some documentation on that? That seems kinda rediculous.

Actually, I'd like to see that from the EULA. I've seen that from other companies, but I'm pretty sure that it doesn't actually apply on Windows.

Well it's better than 139 on newegg right now and waiting for something on FS/FT to come up.

Ok, if it's worth $85 to you to avoid removing two registry keys

Well, I got another copy *free* from my university - though I'm sure I paid for it through tuition. Point was, $99 for xp pro academic upgrade is not exactly some special exclusive deal to jump on.

Yeah, I've gotten two dics and licenses of XP from my university, a bunch of mac software, SAV 9.0, SAV 10.0, office xp, pro, office 2000 pro, office 2003 pro, 3 copies of visual studio .net (academic).

When I graduated, I got an official letter telling me I could use the software indefinitely but it couldn't be transfered to anyone else. There was also a bunch of babble about congratulations, thanks, and encouragement to continue being a loyal customer.

MCE and XP Pro are basically the same thing. Unless you need to join a Windows domain network, stick with MCE.

Well, I'm just sick of the HP MCE that came with my computer....full of crappy HP related programs that are a PITA to clean when I have a fresh install

I would otherwise...but I like the fresh new feel of a non pre-installed OS...

If I'm not mistaken, MCE is XP pro with the MCE tablet. MCE is installed on top of XP Pro.
