XP Pro takes FOREVER to start

Just got back from a friend's house after being there the better part of two hours. I went over for something totally unrelated to this problem.

XP pro takes TWO MINUTES to start, it's obnoxious. I ran tune xp, registry cleaner after registry cleaner, spybot, ad aware, xp smoker, msconfig and took out all the stuff not needed. I defragged, defragged the boot files, optimized the boot files, everything.

What in the world could be causing this? Temps are fine, nothing else I can think of.

Thanks!!!

where does it seem to be hanging the most?

While it's trying to detect drives? while it's loading windows? After your log on?

Also specs (CPU, ram, etc) would be nice

Check Event Viewer, and look for failures - maybe you would do better to right-click on Application, Security, and System, clear all entries, then reboot. Note the time too when rebooting, so you can verify which of the entries there are actually from the bootup, and not the shutdown. Look for either failures, or else long gaps between events.

boot in safe mode is it still slow? any hardware changes? UDMA4-5 on a 40 ribbon cable will do that?

You might also want to try cleaning out the Windows Prefetch folder. It will be much faster on the first reboot, then even out once the cache builds.

Is the computer on a DSL or Cable internet? I used to have this problem too. Unplug the DSL modem (or just turn it off) and restart the computer, and see if the problem goes away. If it does, PM me and i'll let you know how to fix it. I have the instructions at home (i'm at work).

I had wierd problems like that once, when I was using a Promise Ultra66 card, and added a Maxtor DM+9 60GB drive to the mix. That was with W2K SP2 though, not XP, but it seemed to be more of a Promise driver problem than anything.

Do you just delete the items in the folder???

I've had this exact problem on a system that had RAM that was going bad.

See if thats the case.

Wow, I checked this morning and had but one reply. Came back to bump it and there's a wealth of info, thanks!

It hangs after post, during the xp screen where the bar goes across.
I built it, it's a 755 64 3200+ w/ 512 ram, 200 gigger, ati 8500aiw, and yes, a DSL connection.
I've cleared the prefetch to no avail.

I still need to try booting into safe mode and see what's up.

In msconfig the only thing that doesn't look like ti needs to be there (besides av software) is an epson printer. I'll remove it next time I go over.

Yeah, I've thought to run memtest, just another of those haven't had time things. reminds me to get my disc ready though, thanks! ( I really hope it's not ram)

I've also downloaded bootvis and have it ready for when I go over.

Thing that's weird is it just started recently. All the printer and cards and drivers are the same, I'm positive, so I'm hoping the dsl problem may be the issue.

Thanks again!!
