I use 2K at home and love it, XP at work gives me headaches with all the frills and I want to turn those off. Both are much better for stability than 9X versions, but I can not play my Xwing vs Tie Fighter on 2k or XP because it wont work with anything above DX5 I think. Anyone have a fix for that problem and I will give 2k or XP the total go.

Here you go

Thanks, now I can really say W2K is the best . Now if I can just get all the wires soldered back together on my F16 Combat Stick which my dog chewed in two I will be set.

XP sucked the big one for me. Luckily someone was buying or I'd be stuck with a $129 POS.

I did'nt like it's intrusiveness...always calling microsoft..atuomated task/scheduler this..messenger/media player that etc. Sure I could disable all and tweek the services but then MS or another proggy can change this upon install of updates or another program.

I also did'nt like it intrusive yellow ballons always popping up when over items in the quick launch and other places. NO way to turn these off.

I've used 2000 on 4+ machines for 3+ years and has only crashed once in one game (games fault as it's duplicatable on all machines).

See no reason to upgrade.

I would still use 98 but like the look of 2000 better.

Call me conservative. Hell, I like Netscape 3.0's look better than anything out.

Don't get me wrong, I like XP for work. At home I'd prefer an NT 4.0 compatible with Direct X above 3.0 version... without using a hack that is. One thing positive for XP is that it prefetches files for you, but it doesn't have the simple snap and performance of 98SE. I've only got the newest of my older programs and video capture cards to play with XP, too, which kind of sucks. I can't justify tossing out $1000 cards (in thier day) just to run XP... So I've basically warehoused my old hardware and software until someone re-workz them over to be XP compatible. Luckily they are all spares and probably will never get used again.

A couple of things come to my mind when some one talks about win 98se:
The Blue Screen of Death
Lock Up's
Error after Error
Crashes
etc.

.............but I do have to give it credit though! It's good about networking until one of the things listed above happens.

I was one of the first Win 2K adopters... bought it only 3 months after it was released. My Clanmates used to laugh at me because the drivers were not as mature, there were issues in a few games and the system took a while to boot up. Well long story short: I didn't go back to 98 EVER after that. Even with all it's initial shortcomings Win2K was there to stay. I had the last laugh at those LAN parties by the way: Had the only W2K machine, and it was the only machine to run the entire Weekend without needing a reboot

Now I'm on XP, turned off the bells and whistles and I feel right at home.

EDIT: For all of you not happy with Windows XPs annoying habit of "calling home" try this: http://www.xp-antispy.org/

Never had BSOD's with 98SE. Only see them on NT, 2k, and XP.

Now I know you're being sarcastic.

No sarcasm intended. Only saw 98 crap out with bad memory, weak power supplies, and pre-PnP compliant hardware. Never personally really had blue screens except with bad memory and weak power supplies, which both are a bitch to troubleshoot with any OS.

Never got to using them yet, went from 95 to NT4 and on to w2K pro and currently w2K server. I don't intend to upgrading to XP. Probably in a year I will try Linux, I dabbled with it alittle a couple years back but never got to using it much.

I'm much happier on my XP Pro machine. My wife's XP home is a bit of a pain when it comes to networking configuration, but I guess that is because I am used to the flexibility of Windows XP Pro, Win 2000, and Solaris 8. The thing doesn't crash like my Win 98 load, and games hardly ever crash. They would constantly crash on Win 98. My 2X boot Win98 and Win 2000 recently got rebuilt as a Win 2000 machine only. There is no going back for me.
