Ok, for whatever reason its now trying to run the repair and re-installing the WIN XP home ed files. Its now at a spot where it says:

Some files on Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 CD are needed.

Yet my Dell came with one OS disk which has SP2 on the same disk. If I try to browse to the CD drive (drive D:\) I get a window popping up saying "D:\ is not accessable. In correct funcion". WTF? I was just running the repair from that drive.

Any ideas?

Repair now happening - but stuck - see above.

----

To follow up ... I can run the original XP CD an it doesn't seem to matter whether I chose to "Install Windows" or "Choose the Reovery Console" option, which ever I choose, the next screen is the following:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down o prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen apears again, follow these steps:

Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmenation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and check fo any updated drivers, and the restart your computer.

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x00000023 (0x000E0100, 0xF789E170, 0xF789DE6C, 0x808AFC32)

*** acpiec.sys - Address F789DE6C base at F789DE6C, DateStamp 00000000

BTW, this all started immediately after updating my graphics driver (ATI Radeon X800SE). I immediately got the BSOD and figured I had a bad driver, but things went from bad to worse. Now windows won't start.

Help!

Use NLite to slipstream your Dell XP Install CD to Service Pack 2 and create a new CD. It doesn't take very long. Peform the Repair Install from the new, slipstreamed, CD.

If this repair doesn't work, I'll give that a try. I cancelled out of that one item and the repair seems to have proceeded normally. Now its rebooted and at the Microsoft Windows XP black screen with the logo saying "please wait" for quite a while now. I'm going to bed so its going to have to wait on me now!

Would've tried it at first but I couldn't even boot to safe mode. I tried, then it wouldn't boot at all because windows wouldn't load. Maybe I can try to roll back to an earlier date now that it is booting?

After doing the repair, I cannot connect to the internet via the onboard network adaptor, a USB wireless adaptor or a USB ethernet adaptor. Must be a protocol is not working or installed.

I"m going to try a roll back now if I can figure that one out.

Update:

System was restored to a date 3 days ago - seems to have solved the issues. After this the system booted up normally, shows it now has service pack 3 and it connects to the internet. So far no BSOD which started after I updated the Radeon X800 driver and this whole mess. Likely I did havea corrupt file that was corrected during the process. I did do a repair which copied system files back. Must be restore copies back window files which where saved by the system restore utility and copied back during restore? This was pretty convoluted but it is working now.

The saga continues.

After restoring, I've found issues here and there, including IE8 is having problems etc, can't type in stuff in the boxes.

So... I'm biting the bullet and saving off my important files and doing a reformat and fresh install. I'm actually surprised I've gone for 4.5 years on the same original windows install.
