Sorry to have to do this, but I had to firewall off most asian ip addresses, as I had too many abusive users from that area using "download accelerators". These programs play havok with the web server, causing a BILLION child processes to spawn, and blocking off legit downloaders.

OK, i activated a connection limit option in apache, only allows one connection attempt per ip. So hopefully legit downloaders wont have a prob, and people using garbage ware accelerators wont get very far.

I would strongly suggest installing XP SP3 only: while booted in F8/Safe Mode.

I've never heard that one before. Heck, I didn't even know SPs could be installed in SM.

Regardless, any such major messin' with the OS ought be preceeded by a backup (image or clone). It only makes sense.

Yeah, I've never heard of doing Service Packs in Safe Mode. Apparently some can be done that way.

I do SPs for clients without backups (figuring that we can, at least, always grab the data from their drive if disaster strikes). But nowadays I wouldn't do an SP on my own PCs without a recent backup. Heck, just installing Microsoft's Office 2007 Trial Version totally trashed a healthy XP box of mine, requiring an XP Repair Installation to get it running in anything but Safe Mode. And System Restores didn't help, either.

This is why I'm so fond of my Windows Home Server box. I can trash any PC on my home network and automatically restore it to last night's condition painlessly. At least, in theory.

Are you guys joking about the BSODs? If you are using the RTM version of SP3, and it's causing as many BSODs as indicated here, then there's big problems ahead...

I wish I were kidding about the BSOD. Used what I believe to be the RTM download from microsoft's site. I obviously have no way to check it now. Seemed to install fine, but on restart, dead. I have a recent backup which I hope is good, but I still have to reinstall windows which is a PITA for an upgrade that should have just worked.

Safe Mode was the only way (short of completely uninstalling several anti-virus/anti-malware programs) that I could complete the installation for several of the SP3 Beta versions. So that's how I installed SP3 Final, which completed without problem.

Rather than reinstalling, simply run setup and choose the repair option.

If SP3 were integrated first then that may be "cleaner" and save a step.

I will try the repair option, but I've had poor luck with that in the past.

I downloaded from Medfly's server. Install went fine and was really uneventful. Now my icons are disappearing and the system can't seem to locate them properly. When I try to change an icon, the OS reports Shell32.dll (among others) contains no icons. WTF? Anyone know a fix for this issue? Computer is running fine otherwise.

oh, and thanks Medfly (I think).

Update: found fix on TechNet

Copy the entirety of the below (between the staggered lines) to notepad. Save as fixicons.reg

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel]
"{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel]
"{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}"=dword:0000000

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\ClassicStartMenu]
"{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\ClassicStartMenu]
"{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}"=dword:00000000

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Merge reg file and reboot. The above fixed almost all my icon issues, just had to manually assign an icon to a few items but all went smoothly.
System now recognizes icons in shell32.dll .

Odd, I haven't had any problems yet. I work IT for a major university, so I've gotten to test it on a variety of hardware platforms. I am wondering if the people having problems have registry damage, or something else thats getting in the way of SP3. I remember when SP2 came out, lots of people had problems due to spyware, crappy AV, poor drivers, and so on. Wouldnt be surprised if the same was happening here.

After the reg file fix above, I again ran TweakUI's Repair Icons feature because I had a few remaining issues. The Control Panel icon was missing, dvd drive icon was missing, and a few others.

I read your post again, Medfly, and have to say that my system is exposed to a great many hazards but I do my best to maintain it. I work on sick computers almost daily so try to maintain mine in the best shape I can. It was, however, a very old install of SP2 and some registry issues could certainly have been there. It might also be this particular combination of hardware and software is one you have not encountered - and I would bet on that.

I did note that a few others have reported similar issues, at least when they had installed the RCs.

All is well for now. In any case, I have a full Acronis backup of the SP2 install so there is little risk.

Always a good idea to dump an image of a system before installing a freshly released SP . Only time I've ever seen SP2 bsod a box is when it had VERY poor drivers, or lots of registry damage, or a nasty spyware issue.

Another victim I guess, UBCD4Win builds just fine on a slipstreamed copy of XP SP3... but it won't boot. Tried twice. Made a 3rd copy using XP SP2 and she boots fine. Probably a minor tweak needed in the UBCD4Win layout.
