The only issue I had was a Visual Style that didn't work. Got an updated uxtheme.dll file from the Interwebs and all is right again.

My BSOD after install is related to gdi32.dll. Anyone know how I can replace this, and with what? Computer, how did you replace the file under DOS with an NTFS disk?

-[ OFFICIAL version, and why isn't it on windows update?] it was pulled, won't know if they change it, until they repost it,
that said I did install it,from the link ,seemed ok But had 5-7 xp start up scrolls instead of 2.5
-I started to play crysis again with new sli but crashes all over with patches 1.21 and 174.74 after a number of reloads over 5 days of crysis and patches and nvidia drivers I found the scrolling went back to 2.5, related-unrelated who knows. ended up with patch 1.1 and 171.17 to play .

But the question I have ,if someone could tell me is , what if I do a WINDOWS REPAIR will I loose SP3, and have to reload it, or if I slipstream it,will it still do windows repair ?

When you do a Windows XP Repair Installation, you get out of it whatever version of Install CD you put into it. If you put a slipstreamed XP SP3 Install CD, then you'll get a repaired XP SP3 out of it.

How do you know it's related to gdi32.dll?

Well it's not really DOS, that's just what I call it because it's not in Windows. It's just the "PC DOS" or pseudo DOS from XP. Just boot off the CD then you have to go through all that BS like you're installing XP, but press the R for repair when you get to that part. Then at the prompt you can put the file back using the rename or ren, and the copy commands. I don't even remember what the prompt is now, I don't think it's C:\WINDOWS, I think it's longer than that. But let's just call it that for now. What you type is after the > mark, and this is assuming your backed up gdi32.dll is on a storage HD called E:

C:\WINDOWS>copy E:\gdi32.dll C:\WINDOWS\system32

That may not be exactly right, but you get the idea. I never can remember those commands until I'm in DOS. This will overwrite the gdi32.dll in the system32 folder. You can also do it this way if you want to replace the existing gdi32.dll with an earlier version, but remember what I said that did to me!

To rename it, it's something like this:

C:\WINDOWS\system32> rename C:\WINDOWS\system32\gdi32blah.dll gdi32.dll

blah is whatever you renamed it to. That is what I had to do to be able to boot again, I had to rename the SP3 version of the file back to its original name. Note you may have to change directories to the system32 folder so you see it at the prompt.

As for replacing it in Windows, I just dragged an older version into the system32 folder. But it may take a little work and a few tries.

Make a .reg file out of this:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"SFCDisable"=dword:00000001

That allegedly disables the XP SFC WFP which should make it easier to replace system files.

XP will generally or usually keep you from deleting files from the System32 folder and if you somehow manage to do it, it will IMMEDIATELY replace it with what's in the dllcache folder. Hence the reason for the reg file which may have to be run more than once. Even after importing it, XP will STILL try and prevent this.

Show ALL files and show PROTECTED SYSTEM files must be checked in Folder Options so you can see the dllcache folder and other hidden areas in the search. Search your HD for gdi32.

Then be PREPARED to do this, but not yet:

1. Delete gdi32.dll from dllcache folder (and probably anywhere else on C:, they can always be restored from the Recycle Bin if need be).
2. Rename gdi32.dll in the System32 folder to something you'll remember
3. Have the replacement gdi32.dll file ready
4. Note any locations of something like gdi32.d_ or similar, these may have to be deleted as well, these are extracted and renamed by XP to a .dll file.

Then:
Keep the Search window open where you can see all of the gdi32.dll files.

Have the System32 folder open to the gdi32.dll file and be prepared to go to the very end of the folder using the [end] key. (When something is added to an open folder, it goes to the very end of the list of folder/file icons). Highlight the gdi32.dll file so you can quickly see it, keep it highlighted.

This may take some practice runs and quick co-ordination so be sure all involved folders with the appropriate files ARE VISIBLE to you so you won't have to do any scrolling or moving folders around: AS FAST AS YOU CAN, rename the gdi32.dll file in the System32 folder and IMMEDIATELY delete the file in the dllcache folder and IMMEDIATELY right click and drag 'n COPY, not move but COPY, the replacement gdi32.dll file to the System32 folder. You may also have to delete the gdi32.dll file from any "KB Update" folders or "SP Uninstall" folders, etc., because XP may try and "draw" from them, so keep that in mind on the 2nd or 3rd attempt. Then go to the [end] of the system32 folder to check the size and version. When the new gdi32.dll file in the System32 folder is the same size and version of it that's in your backup HD, folder, or where ever you put it, you know it's been replaced with the older file.

That's still open to debate. Personally I haven't had any problems with it that I could not fix, except for the rebooting problem. If that can't be fixed then it's useless to me. All of my old programs, software and drivers still work. The a-holes removed the address bar on the Taskbar option, but I fixed that. They feed you some kind of BS about a legal thing, but if that were true the option would also have been removed from Vista RC1 and SP1, yet it was not! It's just the M$ way of extorting/blackmailing us to move to Vista.

Last I heard, official release will be 5512 I think.

You're giving numerous options after pressing "R" to go into repair mode. I think you can do a help at the prompt and get a listing of a few dozen commands. Some of them are: chkdsk, chkdsk /p, chkdsk /r, fixmbr, fixboot, etc. It will tell you any warnings that you need to know about before doing these.

Now that I think about it, it may not be "help", it may just be a ? mark. I think you can also put a ? after each command for more info, like fixboot ? and that will tell you about the fixboot command.

I don't recall any "repair" option when you reinstall XP. (Even after hundreds of times, I'm amazed that I can't recall all of this!!) But whether it's "repair" or "reinstall", (while you're in the blue screen with light blue text), contrary to what M$ says at their site, you WILL LOSE YOUR DATA! I found that out the hard way! I did a reinstall of XP and it wiped out all email, My Docs, etc. Luckily I don't trust M$'s info so I had backed up everything. So if your CD is SP1, or SP2, it will revert back to SP1 or SP2, whatever the CD is.

Now this is NOT talking about the "press R to repair XP" or whatever that says when you get to that part, that part is in a sort of DOS area, black BG and white text where I mentioned the commands above.

Can someone on SP3 please try and compact folders in OE and see if this happens?

Originally posted by: computer
This is the only SP3 thread here I see so I guess I'll ask this here since all of you are using it.

Why is SP3 duplicating all .dbx files when you compact folders in OE? Twice now when I've compacted folders, a "copying file........." dialog pops up for every single email folder! Then when I look in the Recycle bin, every one of my email folders is in it but with a .bak extension! It appears SP3 is duplicating, copying, all of your dbx files but for what reason? I never saw this on SP2. Apparently this is something new in SP3, have any of you noticed it? Due to the history of XP destroying your emails during a compact, it could be this is a new method of doing so you (it) can recover your emails when it crashes during a compact.

When you do a Windows XP Repair Installation, you get out of it whatever version of Install CD you put into it. If you put a slipstreamed XP SP3 Install CD, then you'll get a repaired XP SP3 out of it.

Thanks Rebate,
I used nLite to make a slipstream disk , in the past on a Intel chipset I would use the repair to update the raid drivers, not sure if it works on a 780i setup ,but I'll try it after newer drivers come out. also it seems I can add IE7 & WM11 to it, neat

I'm installing SP3 from the MS Update site now. We'll see how well the laptop does with it before I try it on my PC.

Could someone post the MD5 sum for the official SP3 Network Install? I want to see if it matches the SP3 install released earlier.

I've been running SP3 on my work laptop for a long time (the last beta and all the RCs), the Gold release is working fine even in a corporate environment. No problems found to date.

I wonder if they got the rebooting/restarting loop problem fixed. It's taking me about 10 tries to finally get the desktop loaded each time I start this PC. Has anyone with this problem installed the release version, and do you still have it or is it fixed?

I've restarted both my computers a couple of times since the install. No problems here.

And you had the rebooting problem previously?

Well, I just installed SP3. It seems so good so far. But I'm not sure if it's me or anyone else have internet issues with it? It may just be a coincidence, but my internet has been acting funny. Ever since I installed XP SP3, my bittorrent speeds have throttled and my wireless internet has just gone a bit haywire... hmmm...I am not sure if this is related or not. At first I thought it was maybe the Firewall or my cable (comcast) company/router, but checking it, they the Windows firewall is turned off and the router is okay. Anyone else maybe share the same in my boat perhaps?

Yeah, me too. Throughput tests for me are about twice as slow. But mine is back to normal now! SP3 may need some different tweaks. I'm not using wireless, I'm on a wired router and DSL. Look at this thread here, and check around for more. http://forums.microsoft.com/Te...stID=3301636&SiteID=17 (I'm on that thread). Post back if you find any info. There are several new Services listed after SP3 is installed and one or more of them may have something to do with this. I haven't tried disabling the enabled or enabling the disabled yet.

SP3 has some new networking additions but I can't find them right now. May be something about them here: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=936929
