Just a few days ago, for no reason I could discern, I lost the XP opening splash screen and the shutdown screen. Both are replaced by dialog boxes. The opening one says "loading settings" like used to be displayed on the splash screen.
At shutdown, the SIMPLE GUI with "Standby," "Restart," and "Shutdown" options has been replaced by a complex dialog box that requires me choose those options from a drop-down list and then specify the REASON for wanting to shut down -- e.g., OS upgrade, OS reconfiguration, hardware upgrade, hardware maintenance, etc., and I don't even get the "OK" button unless I tick a "Planned" box.
I've Googled this until I can't see straight, but I can find no reference to the problem, let alone an answer.
WHAT in the world happened. How do I get back to the opening splash screen and the SIMPLE shutdown GUI???
