Every time I start my computer there's certain programs that load on my taskbar. Some I want, but some just refuse to be deleted no matter what I do. I've gone to Startup, Taskbar tools, etc. to delete them, but they still show on the taskbar when I reboot or start my computer.

Programs on the Taskbar are usually Quick Launch programs. Right click on the icons you don't want and select DELETE. Then run MSCONFIG, then go to the Startup tab and uncheck those (the same ones) you don't want. That should prevent them from reloading.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Add-or-remove-programs-on-the-Quick-Launch-toolbar

Programs LOADING in the taskbar have nothing to do with Quick Launch. Quick launch is a menu of shortcuts, nothing more, so yes they are icons that show on the taskbar, but they are not running programs. Yes, this menu resides on the taskbar, but deleting things from the quick launch (if you even have that visible) will not prevent anything from loading into the system tray at startup.

He is correct however that MSCONFIG is where you go to prevent things from loading into the system tray (the area by the clock) To get to msconfig, simply open the run box and type MSCONFIG and press enter.

There will be a lot of items in msconfig on the startup tab, if anything isn't obvious just google it to get a description of what it does and use that information to determine if you want to prevent it from starting up.

Upon rebooting, it will tell you that you have a customized startup and you must confirm this and tell it not to show this message again. Once that is done, your computer will start up each time, less anything you unchecked.

Open regedit:
computer\HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Delete entries in there that you don't want running on start up.

The System Tray is now called the Notification Area. That is where background apps show as loaded - those are not what I call user programs in the Taskbar. That area basically belongs to Windows.

The Q/L area on the left side are user designated shortcuts. The icons on the far right are system notifications. Typical icons are speaker control, Internet access, Network Access, Roboform, AV running, safe remove, etc. And system clock.

Between the Q/L are and the Notification area is what I see as the Taskbar, and usually only open/running programs have an icon there. If OP is referring to the Notification Area, a.k.a. Tray, then MSCONFIG is the normal on/off tool unless you want to get involved with Registry editing.

Part of being a tech is understanding what the person asking for help wants, or means. If you take everything someone says literally without reading between the lines then you will be useless at figuring out what they want. In my experience, no one uses the correct terminology.

This person is talking about the tray (yes its the notification area in Win 7, this is windows XP, still known as the SYATEM TRAY). Very rarely do BOOT UP programs start in the actual task bar. Though it is possible.

Thanks all, going to msconfig/startup and unchecking the unwanted programs took care of the problem.
