I was going to dual-boot but never got around to it, I was having some problems with XP (instability issues) so I formatted and was going to install both and than dual boot, however just ended up reinstalling XP. Once I got it up I spent about 30 min. setting it up so the UI would be a little less annoying and it's been running beautifully since.

I think I'll stick with XP for a while longer...

edit: the reason it was running bad before isnt really XP's fault, I had been changing/swapping HW and installing/uninstalling SW for quite a while so it was pretty "dirty" at that point.

Im thinking about it when I do a format and reinstall this month.

My XP install is gone to heck with installing and uninstalling, etc...

Windows 2000 did run faster on my system though.

I havent noticed any real differance in speed once I got rid of the bells and wistles, with the exception of the boot, and during the boot XP is much faster

Well..I have never had Win2K, but after using XP and getting it tweaked just right for me, I will not go back to Win9x/ME full-time ever again.. I know, a little off the topic, but had to get my .02 in.

To be honest it's hard to vote 2K vs. XP, but I think everyone here will vote XP/2K over 98/ME anyday. If they vote otherwise they really need their asses kicked, I hate troubleshooting and working under 98.

I first installed XP and thought that it was ok, but decided that I didn't need the extra crap and went back to Win2k. However, my scanner wouldn't work right with Win2k (damn cheap HP Scanjet 3300Cse), while WinXP had built-in drivers, so back to WinXP I went. I'm still using WinXP Pro to this day, and am reasonably well pleased with it, except that I'd like to have a somewhat faster machine to run it on. (read: dual athlon mp 2000+ with 3GB of DDR SDRAM and a SCSI RAID level 5 array of three 180GB 10k SCSI disks)

I had XP on my notebook (it's what it came with actually) for a few months, but it got on my nerves so bad I put 2K on it.

OS X is big, I think some of the designers went a little too far and could have slimmed it down to make up some of the speed. For instance when copying a file in finder from a smb server (my laptop) I'd get ~400K/s, if I disable sherlock's indexing (manual disable by sending it a SIGSTOP =) ) it jumps to ~800K/s and if I use smbclient instead of finder I get ~2M/s which is as much as my sh!tty laptop hard disk can push. And this is on a 1Ghz G4 with 768M memory.

The hardware rocks, but the OS needs some trimming.

I was actually forced to go back to 2000. I started mesing with the user and system rights in XP and screwed something up. My user/admin account would not work after this so I started to reinstall XP and I apparently locked myslef out of the drive all together. Even after I wrote zeros to the drive it would not allow me to reinstall XP. Kept getting an error that said "In order to prevent damage to your to your computer windows setup has been stoped", or something similar to that. Anyways 2000 installed fine and I think that I am going to stick with it for a little bit and see if I like it more or not. It does seem to be just a hare faster after getting to the desktop anyways

With windows XP is it possible to, by changing permissions on entire drives and the directories on them, to lock youreslf out of even being able to reisntall your OS. Even after writing zeros to the drive (which is supposed to erase everything on you hard drive) I could not reinstall XP. Its deffinately not a hardware problem and I checked everything in the bios and reset to default setting and it still would not install. I removed the second hard drive and the cd roms from the ide chanels, still could not install. Reseated the vid card, mem, nic, the works, still would not install. Wierd problem, any ideas. Gues I should start a thread on this one.

Your talking crazy.

I don't know what copy of xp you have but that sounds like the drives the problem.

you can trash xp till you get the blue screen of death.
Repartition the drive, format and pow!

well i had xp installed, and used it for a couple months. i lost all my data being of some circumstances i won't get into, but i couldn't find my xp cd so i installed win2k instead. i liked the clean look of win2k, and it seemed to run okay. everything ran fine, but i noticed that 2k seemed a lot slower than xp, opening programs and such. so i switched back to xp, and now i am a happy camper.

there could have been something wrong with your MBR.
running a program such as "ZAP" would have fixed the problem unless there is something physically wrong with your drive.

I tried XP a few times but I always go back to Win2k.

I find myself turning off all the bells & whistles of XP & then I think to myself this looks & feels just like Win2k.

Then I install win2k & wonder why I ever left it,why mess with the best OS Microsoft ever made.

I think WinXP is a good ideal but leave all the fluff out & it's basicaly win2k with better driver support, so since i upgrade my drivers myself I have no use for XP.

I never bothered with Win2000,using Win98 on my old PC and WinXP on my latest one,to be honest both are rock stable,(even 98 one) so I`ve no reason to use Win2K.

than you are the exeption, this means that you:
rarely install new software
never install new hardware (this is a laptop though)

Actually I do , on my my WinXP I installed firmware update today for my DVD drive, plus Nero update and MSN(all today), on my Win 98 PC installed Logitech mouse drivers updates, firmware update for DVD drive again ,MSN,AVG update,Ontrack update,ad-aware update, still got some more software to install but on 56k takes awhile.I game a lot as well so will be buying some more games over the weekend.

Last hardware update was CD-RW burner installed about 4 weeks ok on my XP rig.I build my own PCs so know exactly what parts and software I want to install.I`m not one of those that upgrades all parts every 6 months or so, I like to get my moneys worth out of my hardware but do buy lots of gaming software,Morrowind is next on my list .

<< wow, with luck like that you should play the lottery every day! >>

Once a week is enough for me ,there`s no secret in having good stability, just use good quality parts and keep your OS ,programs updated and use a good registry cleaner to get rid of those old or invalid registry files in your registry. The longer you stay on one OS the better you should know it.
